claude-cat: Instructions file for Claude Code

CLAUDE.md

claude-cat CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code from thingineeer/claude-cat. It costs 2,330 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

A session guide for Claude Cat, a coding project with defined Git branches and pull-request rules. It explains how contributors should work before changes reach released software.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to choose the right branch type, keep work in an isolated branch, open pull requests to the correct target, and follow the repository's working loop.
Why use it?
It prevents direct changes to protected branches and makes the expected path from a topic branch through review to release clear.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.02330 $0.02330
Opus 5 $0.01165 $0.01165
Sonnet 5 $0.00466 $0.00466
Haiku 4.5 $0.00233 $0.00233

Security

Grade A, and why

claude-cat CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 8d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

CLAUDE.md — session playbook

This file is automatically loaded into Claude Code sessions started in this repo. It encodes the project's working rules so every session (and every contributor, AI-assisted or not) follows them without having to dig through CONTRIBUTING.md each time.

Branch model — read this first

  feat/* ──PR──▶ dev ──release PR──▶ main ──tagged──▶ GitHub Release
  fix/* │ │
  chore/* │ (maintainer
  docs/* │ only decides
                     │ when to cut)
        day-to-day integration released versions
  • main is released software. Never commit or push to it directly. Only the maintainer opens dev → main PRs when a release is ready.
  • dev is where daily work integrates. Never commit or push to it directly either — open a PR from a feature branch.
  • feat/<topic> / fix/<topic> / chore/<topic> / docs/<topic> — short-lived, one-topic branches. PR base is always dev, unless the maintainer says otherwise.

The pre-commit and pre-push hooks reject direct work on main and dev locally. GitHub branch protection enforces the same rule server-side.

Worktree-only policy — hard rule

The primary checkout (~/Desktop/claude-cat) stays on dev and is read-only for humans and AI alike:

  • git fetch origin
  • git pull --ff-only origin dev (sync after PRs merge)
  • git worktree add … / git worktree remove …
  • ❌ editing files in the primary checkout
  • git commit in the primary checkout
  • git push of the primary checkout

All editing, committing, and pushing happens in side worktrees:

~/Desktop/claude-cat ← primary, dev, read-only
~/Desktop/claude-cat.feat-<topic-a> ← side worktree for topic A
~/Desktop/claude-cat.fix-<topic-b> ← side worktree for topic B
~/Desktop/claude-cat.chore-<topic-c> ← another side worktree

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
