rosetta: Instructions file for GitHub Copilot

.github/instructions/npm-channel-source-of-truth.instructions.md

rosetta npm-channel-source-of-truth.instructions.md is an instructions file for GitHub Copilot from tikoci/rosetta. It costs 294 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

A release rule that makes the version in package.json the single source for choosing the npm release channel. A release channel identifies whether a package is stable or a prerelease such as alpha, beta, or release candidate.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when maintaining the release workflow's channel detection and validating stable or prerelease version formats.
Why use it?
It prevents package.json and CI settings from disagreeing about where a release belongs. Invalid version formats fail instead of being mistakenly treated as stable.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00294 $0.00294
Opus 5.5 $0.00118 $0.00118
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00059 $0.00059
Haiku 4.5 $0.00029 $0.00029

Security

Grade A, and why

rosetta npm-channel-source-of-truth.instructions.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 22d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

npm channel source of truth

release.yml's "Determine npm release channel" step derives latest vs. prerelease (dist-tag next) entirely by parsing package.json's committed version field.

  • Do not add a workflow_dispatch input, environment variable, or other CI-side flag that also selects or overrides the channel — that would let the two signals disagree.
  • A bare MAJOR.MINOR.PATCH version means latest. A MAJOR.MINOR.PATCH-next or -next.N version means prerelease, published to the next dist-tag. There are exactly two channels (#152): any other identifier, including the retired alpha/beta/rc, fails the workflow loudly — never treat an unrecognized shape as latest by default.
  • If a channel-adjacent input is genuinely needed later (e.g. limiting which registries get the floating tag), keep package.json's version as the single source of truth for the channel decision itself, and layer the new input on top rather than replacing it.
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
