mealie-mcp-server: Instructions file for Claude Code

CLAUDE.md

mealie-mcp-server CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code from timo-reymann/mealie-mcp-server. It costs 500 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

Project instructions for mealie-mcp-server, a server that connects AI assistants to the Mealie recipe-management API. They define how tools must document the Mealie web endpoints they call.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use them when adding or changing tools, documenting which Mealie API routes they use, regenerating documentation, or running the project's checks.
Why use it?
They keep tool documentation and generated API coverage records accurate, while automated checks catch missing descriptions or endpoint mappings.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00500 $0.00500
Opus 5 $0.00250 $0.00250
Sonnet 5 $0.00100 $0.00100
Haiku 4.5 $0.00050 $0.00050

Measured 9d ago against content hash 957177d0b39f, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-09-09, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

mealie-mcp-server CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

CLAUDE.md

Project conventions for AI coding assistants working on mealie-mcp-server.

Tool Registration

Every tool registered via server.tool() in src/tools/*.ts must have:

  1. A // @endpoints comment on the line(s) directly above the server.tool( call listing every Mealie API endpoint the tool hits, using METHOD /path format:

    // @endpoints GET /api/recipes/{slug}, PATCH /api/recipes/{slug}
    server.tool(
      'update_recipe_ingredients',
      'Description of the tool.',
      { ... },
      async (...) => { ... },
    );

  2. A description string as the second argument to server.tool().

These are enforced by:

  • Pre-commit hook: regenerates README and API_COVERAGE.md, commits them automatically.
  • CI: yarn gen:docs:check fails if any tool lacks @endpoints or description.
  • Test: src/__tests__/docs-generation.test.ts asserts all 61 tools have both.

Adding a New Tool

  1. Add the tool to src/tools/<category>.ts with a // @endpoints comment and description.
  2. Run yarn gen:docs to regenerate docs.
  3. The pre-commit hook handles restaging — just commit normally.

Endpoint Mapping Rules

  • Simple tools: list the endpoint(s) the handler calls directly.
  • Composite tools (e.g. find_recipes_for_ingredients): list every endpoint reachable from the handler, including calls through src/lib/*.ts helpers.
  • GET with queryFilter (e.g. get_food_matches): note it as GET /api/foods (with queryFilter).
  • Multiple endpoints: comma-separated, e.g. GET /api/recipes/{slug}, PATCH /api/recipes/{slug}.

Scripts

  • yarn gen:docs — regenerate README tool list + API_COVERAGE.md from source.
  • yarn gen:docs:check — fail if stale (used in CI).

Testing

  • yarn test — runs vitest. Tests in src/__tests__/.
  • yarn lint — ESLint.
  • yarn typecheck — TypeScript strict check.
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
