the-pair: Instructions file for Claude Code

CLAUDE.md

the-pair CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code from timwuhaotian/the-pair. It costs 2,041 tokens per session, scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

Project instructions for The Pair, a desktop app in which two AI agents work together on coding tasks: one plans and reviews, while the other writes code and runs commands.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use them to install, run, test, and modify The Pair's Rust backend or React and TypeScript interface.
Why use it?
They explain the app's architecture, setup, development commands, and supported local AI command-line tools.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.02041 $0.02041
Opus 5 $0.01020 $0.01020
Sonnet 5 $0.00408 $0.00408
Haiku 4.5 $0.00204 $0.00204

Security

Grade A, and why

the-pair CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 10d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

CLAUDE.md

This file provides guidance to Claude Code (claude.ai/code) when working with code in this repository.

AGENTS.md contains the longer architectural reference (module table, component table, state machine, release process). Read it when you need that depth; this file covers the essentials for getting productive fast.

What this app is

The Pair is a Tauri 2 desktop app (Rust backend, React 19 + TypeScript frontend) that orchestrates two AI agents working together on a coding task:

  • Mentor — read-only planner/reviewer
  • Executor — code writer / command runner

The Rust backend spawns local provider CLIs (opencode, claude, codex, gemini, kimi), parses their JSON event streams, runs a turn-based state machine, monitors process resources, and tracks git changes. The React frontend renders the conversation, status, and controls.

Commands

# Setup
npm install
npm run preflight # Verify rust/node/CLI tools are present

npm run dev:mock # Same, with THE_PAIR_E2E_MOCK=true (no real CLI spawns)
npm run dev:renderer # Renderer-only (browser at :5173, no Tauri APIs)

# Quality gates (run before committing)
npm run lint # eslint --cache
npm run typecheck # Runs both typecheck:node and typecheck:web

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
