agent-skills-best-practice: Instructions file for Kiro

.kiro/steering/product.md

agent-skills-best-practice product.md is an instructions file for Kiro from timwukp/agent-skills-best-practice. It costs 355 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

An educational repository about building skills for AI coding agents such as Kiro and Claude Code. It includes example skills, a workshop, tests, installation tools, and guidance on the Agent Skills specification.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to study agent-skill design, follow the workshop, create reusable skills, and validate or install them.
Why use it?
It gives developers an organised way to learn how agents load specialised instructions and supporting files. It also explains how to make skills portable across supported agent tools.

Instructions file for Kiro

Written for Kiro: installed under .kiro/. Also seen: mentions Claude Code.

This is timwukp/agent-skills-best-practice's own configuration. It tells Kiro how to work on agent-skills-best-practice itself, so it is not a mod to install elsewhere. Copy it as a starting point and replace the rules that are about this project. Everything agent-skills-best-practice configures →

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00355 $0.00355
Opus 5 $0.00178 $0.00178
Sonnet 5 $0.00071 $0.00071
Haiku 4.5 $0.00036 $0.00036

Measured yesterday against content hash 3ee509806362, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-09-08, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

agent-skills-best-practice product.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured yesterday.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Product Overview

This repository teaches AWS SAs and developers how to build agent skills — folders of instructions, scripts, and resources that AI agents (Kiro, Claude Code, Claude.ai) load dynamically to improve performance on specialized tasks.

It contains:

  • Example skills in skills/skills/: Apache 2.0 examples from Anthropic (skill-creator, mcp-builder, canvas-design, etc.) plus MIT-licensed software engineering workflow skills built for this repo (api-design, git-workflow, cicd-pipeline, terraform-module, and others).
  • A 6-hour workshop in skills-workshop/ with slides, exercises, labs, and test cases.
  • Tooling: a validation script used by CI, an install script for Kiro, and per-skill evals.

Skills here conform to the Agent Skills specification and are portable across Kiro, Claude Code, Claude.ai, and the Claude API. Anthropic's source-available document skills (docx, pdf, pptx, xlsx) are intentionally not included; this repo only carries open-source content.

Key Principles

  • A skill is a self-contained folder whose SKILL.md has YAML frontmatter (name, description) followed by instructions.
  • Descriptions drive activation: third person, what the skill does plus when to use it, with concrete trigger phrases.
  • Progressive disclosure: keep SKILL.md under 500 lines; push details into references/, code into scripts/.
  • Evaluation-first: engineering skills ship evals/ with task evals and should-trigger / should-not-trigger queries.
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
