duckdb-differential: Instructions file for Codex

AGENTS.md

duckdb-differential AGENTS.md is an instructions file for Codex, OpenCode from tobilg/duckdb-differential. It costs 3,846 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

A set of project instructions for developing the duckdb-differential DuckDB extension. It records required versions, supported systems, storage rules, testing practices, and credential handling.

In plain words
What is it for?
It is for guiding implementation, destructive-test safety, AWS SDK use, build verification, and decisions about changes to the extension.
Why use it?
It gives coding agents a fixed set of rules to follow so changes do not weaken data durability, break ordering, misuse credentials, or overwrite unrelated work.

Written for Codex and OpenCode: the file is AGENTS.md. Also seen: mentions .claude-plugin.

This is tobilg/duckdb-differential's own configuration. It tells Codex and OpenCode how to work on duckdb-differential itself, so it is not a mod to install elsewhere. Copy it as a starting point and replace the rules that are about this project. Everything duckdb-differential configures →

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.03846 $0.03846
Opus 5.5 $0.01538 $0.01538
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00769 $0.00769
Haiku 4.5 $0.00385 $0.00385

Security

Grade A, and why

duckdb-differential AGENTS.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 6d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Project instructions

  • Target DuckDB v2.0.0 (the community repository's current stable; pinned to commit d54cbbe3df, which the community repository builds as v2.0.0, until the tag exists). One C++ extension on DuckDB's C++ extension template, native storage semantics. Linux and macOS (Apple silicon) only.
  • All S3 operations must use the AWS SDK for C++ pinned through vcpkg (VCPKG_COMMIT).
  • Preserve native sync/namespace ordering, durable mappings, and all retention roots.
  • Never perform persistent management actions during bind or planning. The one approved exception: an AT (...) clause opens a hidden read-only snapshot attachment and takes its reader pin at bind time. Do not extend it to identities, snapshots or exports.
  • Use only disposable directories and provider namespaces for destructive tests.
  • Record actual commands/results in private, untracked implementation notes; distinguish passed probes from full acceptance criteria and untested guarantees.
  • Preserve unrelated user edits.
  • Do not adopt a core patch, fork, daemon, or weaker durability without a product decision.
  • Credentials come from DuckDB TYPE s3 secrets, a named profile or the AWS SDK chain. Never accept them as ATTACH or function options, and never write them anywhere (metadata store, descriptors, heads, listings, status, errors). Commit only when asked.

Product decisions in force

Each decision was made by the repository owner; changing one needs the owner's agreement.

  • Native-equivalent durability. Writes go to an overlay and the file group's append-only segment, and are durable at native FileSync (segment fsync, then SQLite FULL with fsync, on every OS as native DuckDB; macOS included, no F_FULLFSYNC: owner decision 2026-10-19).
  • Store format 2 (2026-10-19). Payload moved out of SQLite into append-only segments that are also the write journal; 256 KiB block-aligned chunks; WAL sidecars stored as byte ranges; CRC32C verifies local reads (SHA-256 stays the identity and the S3 checksum); exports are differential-export-v2/DIX2. One format revision ahead of WAL shipping.
  • Local eviction. The local copy of a completed S3 export may be evicted; reads then go through S3, and branch/clone/restore rehydrate.
  • SQL surface. The surface is DuckLake-aligned, and the old functions were replaced outright, with no aliases. Time travel addresses public snapshots, not individual commits. Snapshot on every checkpoint is opt-in.
  • Catalog functions and AT. Catalog-scoped functions and AT time travel are provided, with bind-time reader pins. A TYPE differential secret was not adopted.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
