imessage-mcp: Instructions file for Codex

AGENTS.md

imessage-mcp AGENTS.md is an instructions file for Codex, OpenCode from tszaks/imessage-mcp. It costs 544 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

A set of instructions for developing and safely testing an iMessage MCP server. The server reads the macOS Messages database and can send messages through AppleScript.

In plain words
What is it for?
It is for installing, building, testing, and running this Node.js server, and for understanding its code layout and message tools.
Why use it?
It documents the build and test rules, including how to avoid sending real messages or changing the real Messages database during tests.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00544 $0.00544
Opus 5.5 $0.00218 $0.00218
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00109 $0.00109
Haiku 4.5 $0.00054 $0.00054

Security

Grade A, and why

imessage-mcp AGENTS.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 4d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

iMessage MCP

An MCP server (Node.js, CommonJS, stdio) that reads the macOS Messages database and sends messages through AppleScript. Dependencies: @modelcontextprotocol/sdk and better-sqlite3.

This file is for AI agents that work on this code. If you only use the server, read the README.

Build, test, run

  • Node 18 up to but not including 26. Use Node 24 (better-sqlite3 does not build on Node 26). On Homebrew: PATH=/opt/homebrew/opt/node@24/bin:$PATH.
  • Install: npm install (or npm ci).
  • Test: npm test (node --test). Run the whole suite before you say something works. Tests use mocks and temporary databases.
  • Run: node index.js (stdio server; waits for an MCP client).
  • Never run the server against the real Messages database to test sending. Do not call send_message, send_message_batch, react_to_message or any mutation tool for real. Use the injected runScript and temporary databases the tests use.
  • Do not touch ~/Library/Messages, and do not launch the Messages app.

Code map

  • index.js: everything else. Tool registration (the tools list in the ListTools handler), tool handlers, attributedBody decoder, contact cache (AddressBook SQLite), AppleScript builders, release-flag gating (IMESSAGE_MCP_RELEASES), backup and delete logic.
  • lib/batch.js: batch preview, approval tokens.
  • lib/outreach.js: follow-up classification for find_outreach_followups.
  • test/: mcp-tools.test.js, mutation-tools.test.js, batch.test.js, outreach.test.js.

Conventions

  • Match the surrounding code: naming, comment density, idiom. Comments say why, not what.
  • Plain CommonJS. No new dependencies without discussion.
  • Sending, reacting and deleting stay behind confirm: true (plus an approval token for batches and delete_threads). Do not weaken a gate.
  • Mutation and UI-automation tools stay behind release flags. A tool that needs a flag must not be listed without it.
  • The server makes no network requests. Do not add any.
  • Never put real messages, phone numbers or contact names in code, tests or docs.
  • When you add or change a tool or release flag, update the README tools table and release flags table, and CHANGELOG.md.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
