bible-mcp: Instructions file for Codex

AGENTS.md

bible-mcp AGENTS.md is an instructions file for Codex, OpenCode from tuxr/bible-mcp. It costs 2,747 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

A repository guide containing the live URLs, development commands, tests, architecture, and deployment notes for a Bible search server. An MCP server is a service that lets an AI assistant use defined tools.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when developing, testing, type-checking, inspecting, deploying, or migrating the tuxr/bible-mcp project, including its Cloudflare Workers setup.
Why use it?
It gives an agent the project-specific information needed to work on this codebase without guessing how it runs, connects to the Bible API, or is deployed.

Instructions file for CodexOpenCode

Written for Codex and OpenCode: the file is AGENTS.md. Also seen: mentions AGENTS.md.

This is tuxr/bible-mcp's own configuration. It tells Codex and OpenCode how to work on bible-mcp itself, so it is not a mod to install elsewhere. Copy it as a starting point and replace the rules that are about this project. Everything bible-mcp configures →

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.02747 $0.02747
Opus 5 $0.01373 $0.01373
Sonnet 5 $0.00549 $0.00549
Haiku 4.5 $0.00275 $0.00275

Measured 6d ago against content hash 97b6b8a1c317, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-09-06, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

bible-mcp AGENTS.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 6d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Architecture

This is a stateless MCP server hosted on Cloudflare Workers that communicates with a Bible API (GitHub).

MCP Client (Claude.ai) → MCP Worker ──[HTTPS or Service Binding]──► Bible API → D1 Database

API Connection Options:

  • Public API: Set BIBLE_API_URL in wrangler.toml - works across Cloudflare accounts
  • Service Binding: Configure [[services]] in wrangler.toml - faster, same account only

The fetchApi<T>() function automatically detects which mode to use based on available environment bindings.

Routes:

  • / - Server info JSON (name, version, tools, prompts, documentation link)
  • /mcp - MCP protocol endpoint (for Claude.ai/ChatGPT connectors)
  • /favicon.svg, /favicon.ico - Book icon favicon
  • /api, /connect - Redirect to /mcp

Source layout (src/):

Module Role
index.ts Worker entry: routes (/, /mcp, favicon), SERVER_INFO, wires createFetchApicreateServer
api-client.ts createFetchApi(), error formatting (formatToolError, formatApiError), 429 retry/backoff
mcp-server.ts createServer(fetchApi) — MCP tools, prompts, and read_bible app resource (new instance per request)
bible-reader-html.ts Inline HTML for the read_bible MCP App UI
translation-utils.ts Shared translation/RTL helpers (server + reader UI injection)
test-helpers.ts Shared test utilities (createTestFetchApi, mockResponse, mockRateLimitResponse)
api-client.test.ts Unit tests for API client and error formatting (82 tests)
mcp-handlers.test.ts Integration tests for MCP tool handlers via in-memory transport

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
