myanimelist-mcp CLAUDE.md

myanimelist-mcp CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code from UmutKDev/myanimelist-mcp. It costs 2,257 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

A repository guide for Claude Code that explains a Python server, its React web interface, project commands, layout, and coding style. The server provides tools through MCP, a standard way for AI assistants to use software services.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when developing, testing, running, or publishing the MyAnimeList MCP server and its web interface.
Why use it?
It gives the coding agent the project-specific information needed to work consistently and run the right checks. It also explains how the package is built and published.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.02257 $0.02257
Opus 5 $0.01128 $0.01128
Sonnet 5 $0.00451 $0.00451
Haiku 4.5 $0.00226 $0.00226

Measured 5d ago against content hash d885e5062b4a, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-09-06, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

myanimelist-mcp CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 5d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Project

MyAnimeList MCP server, distributed on PyPI and launched by MCP clients over stdio (uvx myanimelist-mcp). A Python 3.12 + FastMCP 3 backend exposes 20 tools, and a Vite/React/TypeScript app (ui/) is embedded as a ui:// MCP Apps resource. Managed with uv.

The PyPI distribution is myanimelist-mcp; the import package stays mal_mcp.

CI is one tag-triggered workflow (.github/workflows/publish.yml): it builds the UI bundle, runs the tests, builds the wheel, and publishes to PyPI via Trusted Publishing (OIDC). Day-to-day development is still entirely local.

Commands

  • uv sync — install Python deps
  • uv run pytest — run the offline unit tests (no network)
  • uv run myanimelist-mcp — run the server over stdio (also python -m mal_mcp). It waits on stdin for JSON-RPC, so it never returns on its own — drive it with an MCP client, don't call it bare
  • cd ui && npm ci then npm run build — build the UI bundle → src/mal_mcp/ui/dist/index.html
  • cd ui && npm run dev — Vite dev server with fixtures (see .claude/launch.json mal-ui-dev, port 5199)
  • cd ui && npm run typechecktsc --noEmit
  • uv build — build sdist + wheel (build the UI first, or the bundle is missing)

There is no Python linter/formatter/typechecker configured (no ruff/black/mypy). Do not invent lint/format commands. The only "typecheck" is the UI's npm run typecheck.

Layout

  • src/mal_mcp/server.py — FastMCP app, token resolution, all @mcp.tool definitions, pure stats/format helpers
  • src/mal_mcp/mal_client.py — async MAL API v2 wrapper (MALClient), field sets, retries, error types
  • src/mal_mcp/token_manager.py — self-renewing OAuth refresh_token grant (in-memory only)
  • src/mal_mcp/ui/__init__.py — MCP Apps layer (register_ui, ui_result, ui_tool_meta); ui/dist/ is the built bundle
  • src/mal_mcp/__main__.pypython -m mal_mcp shim; main() itself lives at the bottom of server.py
  • tests/ — offline pytest suite; ui/ — the React/Vite source for the embedded app
  • .github/workflows/publish.yml — tag-triggered UI build + wheel build + PyPI Trusted Publishing

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
