splitwise-mcp CLAUDE.md

splitwise-mcp CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code from vishnujayvel/splitwise-mcp. It costs 614 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

Project instructions for an MCP server that lets AI assistants manage shared Splitwise expenses. It describes the server’s structure, duplicate checks, local cache, and development commands.

In plain words
What is it for?
Useful when developing, testing, configuring, or inspecting the Splitwise MCP server and its connection to the Splitwise expense-sharing service.
Why use it?
It gives coding agents the project rules and setup details needed to make safe changes without creating duplicate expenses or missing the expected checks.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00614 $0.00614
Opus 5 $0.00307 $0.00307
Sonnet 5 $0.00123 $0.00123
Haiku 4.5 $0.00061 $0.00061

Measured 5d ago against content hash aa17e5e10a19, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-09-06, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

splitwise-mcp CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 5d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Splitwise MCP Server

Project Overview

This is a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for managing Splitwise expenses with atomic duplicate prevention. It enables AI assistants like Claude to create, query, and manage shared expenses.

Architecture

src/splitwise_mcp/
├── server.py - MCP server with tool definitions
├── client.py - Splitwise API client wrapper
├── cache.py - Local SQLite caching layer
├── tools.py - Tool handler implementations
└── config.py - Configuration loading utilities

Key Features

  1. Atomic Reservation Pattern - Reserve-then-create prevents duplicate expenses
  2. Duplicate Detection - Fuzzy matching on description, amount, and date
  3. Local SQLite Cache - Fast lookups without API calls
  4. Flexible Split Ratios - Support for any percentage (50/50, 75/25, etc.)
  5. Order ID Tracking - Link expenses to source orders for traceability

Development Commands

# Install in development mode
pip install -e .[dev]

# Run tests
PYTHONPATH=src pytest tests/ -v

# Start MCP server
python -m splitwise_mcp.server

# Test with MCP Inspector
npx @modelcontextprotocol/inspector python -m splitwise_mcp.server

Configuration

The server loads configuration in this priority order:

  1. Environment variables (SPLITWISE_API_KEY, SPLITWISE_GROUP_ID, etc.)
  2. File specified by SPLITWISE_CONFIG_PATH environment variable
  3. ./config.json in the current directory

Required configuration fields:

  • api_key - Splitwise API key
  • group_id - Target group ID
  • payer_id - Primary payer's user ID
  • partner_id - Partner's user ID

MCP Tools

Tool Description
splitwise_check_duplicate Check if expense would be a duplicate
splitwise_reserve_expense Atomically reserve an expense slot
splitwise_create_expense Create expense with reservation
splitwise_sync_cache Sync local cache with Splitwise API
splitwise_get_expenses Query cached expenses
splitwise_delete_expense Delete an expense
splitwise_find_by_order_id Find expense by order ID

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
