ansible-mcp-server: Instructions file for Claude Code

CLAUDE.md

ansible-mcp-server CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code from washyu/ansible-mcp-server. It costs 3,151 tokens per session, scanned B, original, MIT.

Project instructions for an Ansible MCP server, a service that lets an agent work with Ansible, a tool for configuring computers and deploying applications. They describe the project structure, infrastructure rules and deployment context.

In plain words
What is it for?
Working on Terraform infrastructure, Ansible configuration, MCP server deployment and the project's inventory system.
Why use it?
They give the agent the project-specific rules needed to make infrastructure changes safely and consistently.

Written for Claude Code: the file is CLAUDE.md.

This is washyu/ansible-mcp-server's own configuration. It tells Claude Code how to work on ansible-mcp-server itself, so it is not a mod to install elsewhere. Copy it as a starting point and replace the rules that are about this project. Everything ansible-mcp-server configures โ†’

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.03151 $0.03151
Opus 5 $0.01576 $0.01576
Sonnet 5 $0.00630 $0.00630
Haiku 4.5 $0.00315 $0.00315

Security

Grade B, and why

ansible-mcp-server CLAUDE.md scanned grade B with 1 finding against 26 rules in 11 categories โ€” prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency โ€” measured 9d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Asks for rootmediumPrivilege escalation

A mod that escalates privileges can change anything on the machine, not only the project.

Ansible MCP Server - Project Context

Architecture Principles

  1. Platform Agnostic Infrastructure

    • Use Terraform for ALL infrastructure provisioning (VMs, cloud resources, etc.)
    • This enables easy migration between Proxmox, AWS, Azure, GCP, etc.
    • Proxmox is just for development; production deployments should work anywhere
  2. OS Configuration via Ansible

    • Use Ansible for ALL OS-level configuration and application deployment
    • Keeps configuration portable across different infrastructure providers
    • Separation of concerns: Terraform = Infrastructure, Ansible = Configuration
  3. Provider Preferences

    • For Proxmox: Use bpg/proxmox provider (more stable than Telmate)
    • Always test with multiple providers when adding new features

Infrastructure Constraints

  • Proxmox Development Environment:
    • Max 12 vCPUs per VM (host limitation)
    • Node name: "proxmox" (not "pve")
    • Template ID 9000: ubuntu-cloud-template

MCP Server Deployment

  • Dev MCP Server: 192.168.10.102 (for testing)
  • Production MCP Server: 192.168.10.110
  • Current Dev VM: 192.168.10.169 (VM ID 100 on Proxmox)
  • Proxmox Host: 192.168.10.200

IMPORTANT: When testing MCP features, use the dev MCP server at 192.168.10.102, NOT local installations!

๐Ÿ—„๏ธ CRITICAL: Inventory Context System (January 25, 2025)

PRIORITY: The MCP MUST maintain up-to-date inventory context of all infrastructure resources.

Core Requirements:

  1. Complete Proxmox Inventory: VMs, templates, ISOs, storage pools, nodes, networks
  2. Automatic Staleness Detection: Context expires after configurable time (default: 10 hours)
  3. Background Refresh: Auto-update stale inventory in background
  4. Tool Blocking: Block infrastructure tools during inventory refresh to prevent inconsistent state
  5. State Modification Tracking: All create/modify/delete operations MUST update inventory context immediately

Implementation Plan:

  • Add Proxmox discovery tool to scan: VMs, templates (ID 9000), ISOs, storage, networks
  • Create inventory refresh mechanism with configurable staleness threshold
  • Implement tool blocking during refresh operations
  • Add inventory update hooks to all state-modifying tools
  • Store inventory with timestamps in /inventory/proxmox-resources.json

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

ansible-mcp-server CLAUDE.md is an instructions file published in the GitHub repository washyu/ansible-mcp-server (7 stars, last pushed 1y ago), licensed MIT. It adds 3,151 tokens to every session, about $0.0158 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it B with 1 finding (asks for root). No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
