featherframe: Instructions file for Codex

AGENTS.md

featherframe AGENTS.md is an instructions file for Codex, OpenCode from wr/featherframe. It costs 4,315 tokens per session, scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

Repository instructions for Featherframe, a project that displays bird detections on an e-paper frame. They define the project's source of truth, writing rules, links, and development commands.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use them when an agent works on Featherframe's Python server, ESP32 firmware, web content, help links, or repository checks.
Why use it?
They give coding agents the project context and the rules for changing user-facing text, documentation, and code. The input does not describe a standalone software feature.

Written for Codex and OpenCode: the file is AGENTS.md. Also seen: mentions CLAUDE.md; mentions subagents; mentions Claude Code.

This is wr/featherframe's own configuration. It tells Codex and OpenCode how to work on featherframe itself, so it is not a mod to install elsewhere. Copy it as a starting point and replace the rules that are about this project. Everything featherframe configures →

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.04315 $0.04315
Opus 5.5 $0.01726 $0.01726
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00863 $0.00863
Haiku 4.5 $0.00432 $0.00432

Security

Grade A, and why

featherframe AGENTS.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 7d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Guidance for coding agents working in this repository. Claude Code reads it through CLAUDE.md; Codex reads it directly.

Source of truth

  • GitHub: github.com/wr/featherframe
  • Linear project: Featherframe (id: cb3f0377-9778-49b2-a57f-e9f39cfb3de5), Personal team (W)

  • PR mode: ready

Writing

Read docs/STYLE.md before writing anything a person reads: webapp copy, the frame's screens, the README, the wiki, the marketing page, commits, PRs, Linear, reports. Use its lexicon. Write every user-facing string yourself, verbatim, in any subagent brief. server/scripts/check_copy.py checks the mechanical rules (make test runs it on the webapp; pass --wiki DIR before pushing the wiki). Link owners to help through featherframe.app/help/<topic> (site/src/help.json), never to the wiki directly.

What this is

Featherframe shows the birds a BirdNET station hears as illustrations from Audubon's and Gould's books, on an e-paper frame. A detector (BirdNET-Pi, BirdNET-Go, or a BirdWeather station) names a species; the server finds its plate, composes a sheet, and finishes it for every frame that shows it; each frame fetches its own bytes.

  • server/: Python/Starlette. Owns all logic and all image processing. Runs self-hosted (on the BirdNET device as a systemd service in its own venv, or in Docker on a NAS) and, unchanged, as Featherframe Cloud's per-household Container.
  • firmware/: ESP32-S3 (PlatformIO). A deliberately simple client that fetches a pre-packed framebuffer and pushes it to the panel.
  • hosted/: Featherframe Cloud on Cloudflare: a Worker, a Durable Object per household (its "front door"), the server in a Container, D1 and R2.
  • site/: featherframe.app, the marketing page and the /help/<topic> links.
  • flasher/: the USB web flasher, published to GitHub Pages on a release.

Two kits run the firmware: the EE03 (Seeed XIAO ePaper Kit, 10.3", 1404×1872, 16-level gray, IT8951) and the EE02 (13.3" E Ink Spectra 6, 1200×1600, six inks, ~15 s full refresh, no partial refresh). A TRMNL, a Kobo or Kindle, and a tablet's browser can be frames too. The wiki (github.com/wr/featherframe/wiki) has the hardware spec, wiring, battery numbers and the guide to porting another panel.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
