herdr-plugin-renamer: Instructions file for Claude Code

CLAUDE.md

herdr-plugin-renamer CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code, Codex from wyattjoh/herdr-plugin-renamer. It costs 3,031 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

A set of instructions for a Rust plugin that names a work pane from the coding agent’s first prompt and can also rename related branches and workspaces.

In plain words
What is it for?
Maintaining the naming plugin, adjusting its naming engines, tracing its pane and branch-renaming flow, and following its module conventions.
Why use it?
It explains the plugin’s two-phase design, naming fallback, event handling, and rules for changing names safely.

Written for Claude Code and Codex: SessionStart hook event, but also runs codex exec. Also seen: reads .claude/ paths; mentions CLAUDE.md; mentions Codex.

This is wyattjoh/herdr-plugin-renamer's own configuration. It tells Claude Code and Codex how to work on herdr-plugin-renamer itself, so it is not a mod to install elsewhere. Copy it as a starting point and replace the rules that are about this project. Everything herdr-plugin-renamer configures →

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.03031 $0.03031
Opus 5 $0.01515 $0.01515
Sonnet 5 $0.00606 $0.00606
Haiku 4.5 $0.00303 $0.00303

Security

Grade A, and why

herdr-plugin-renamer CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

CLAUDE.md

herdr plugin (Rust) that names a herdr pane from the coding agent's first prompt. When the pane is in an auto-generated linked worktree, it also renames the worktree branch and workspace. The naming engine is swappable: on-device Apple FoundationModels by default (a small Swift helper), with a headless Codex call as the automatic fallback.

Architecture

Single binary, two phases (src/main.rs):

  • Hot phase (default, every pane.agent_status_changed event): pure env-var reads, no I/O. context::evaluate bails unless the new status is working and this pane does not already have a done marker. On a pass, writes a pane-scoped claim marker and forks the cold phase detached (setsid).
  • Cold phase (HERDR_NAMING_PHASE=cold): herdr::poll_agent_sessiontranscript::read_first_promptmain::generate_slug (walks the engine::engine_chain; fallback slug::fallback_from_prompt) → herdr::pane_rename. The generated slug is also reported as the task metadata token on the pane and workspace for custom Agent and Space sidebar rows. If the pane is in a linked worktree whose current branch starts with worktree/, git::rename_current_branch renames it to <prefix>/<slug> and only then herdr::workspace_rename renames the workspace to <slug>.

Naming outputs: pane <slug>; branch <prefix>/<slug> (bare <slug> when no prefix is configured; main::compose_branch joins them); workspace <slug> after a successful worktree branch rename. The prefix comes from main::resolve_branch_prefix: HERDR_NAMING_BRANCH_PREFIX env, then a branch-prefix file in HERDR_PLUGIN_CONFIG_DIR, else none.

Foundation-generated slugs should be compact noun-topic labels, not literal sentence summaries. Prefer labels such as current-file over change-selected-file-to-current. The helper must ground labels in the actual prompt and avoid introducing absent concepts from examples or instructions. The default Foundation path is two-pass: generate several candidates, sanitize and dedupe them, then ask FoundationModels to select exactly one candidate from the cleaned list. Codex remains a fallback only when Foundation fails.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
