plant-intel-mcp: Instructions file for Claude Code

CLAUDE.md

plant-intel-mcp CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code from wyattlindsey/plant-intel-mcp. It costs 762 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

Repository-specific instructions for an MCP server that gives AI agents structured plant data for garden planning. They describe its layers, TypeScript conventions, supported runtimes, and testing rules.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use them to develop, test, and maintain the plant-data server, including its API sources, mappers, cache, services, and MCP tools.
Why use it?
They explain how to change the server without mixing plant logic, external data access, caching, and MCP request handling.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00762 $0.00762
Opus 5 $0.00381 $0.00381
Sonnet 5 $0.00152 $0.00152
Haiku 4.5 $0.00076 $0.00076

Security

Grade A, and why

plant-intel-mcp CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 10d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Working in this repo

An MCP server giving agents structured plant data for garden planning. Read README.md first for what it does; this file is about how to change it.

Layered on purpose

domain/ pure logic and types -- no I/O, no Node imports
mappers/ upstream payload -> domain record; pure, fixture-tested
sources/ API clients; take injected fetch + cache
cache/ the Cache interface (portable) and its file implementation (not)
tools/ MCP tool registration and argument handling
services.ts the only place that reaches for the filesystem or global fetch

Keep domain/, mappers/, and sources/ free of Node imports. They must run unchanged in a browser or a Cloudflare Worker so the planned demo can reuse the real logic instead of reimplementing it. cache/json-file-cache.ts, config.ts, and services.ts are the deliberate exceptions.

Conventions

  • TypeScript ESM, Node >=20, native fetch. Runtime deps are @modelcontextprotocol/sdk and zod only -- adding a third needs a reason.
  • Relative imports carry the .js extension (NodeNext resolution).
  • strict, noUncheckedIndexedAccess, and exactOptionalPropertyTypes are on. Build conditional objects with ...(x === undefined ? {} : { x }).
  • Conventional commits, one focused change each. Every commit should leave npm test, npm run typecheck, and npm run build green.

The rules that matter

Never let an upstream tier placeholder reach the model. Perenual's free tier substitutes upgrade prompts into fields it withholds. isTierGated in mappers/perenual.ts catches them by pattern, not by literal string, because the wording is undocumented and has changed. If you add a field to PERENUAL_DETAIL_FIELDS, route it through field().

Say what is missing. A null with no explanation reads as "zero" or "none". PlantProfile.notes and the caveats arrays exist to make absence legible -- which fields a tier withheld, that a neutral companion verdict is absence of evidence rather than compatibility, that Permapeople was never consulted.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
