nanobanana-mcp: Instructions file for Claude Code

CLAUDE.md

nanobanana-mcp CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code from YCSE/nanobanana-mcp. It costs 923 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

Project instructions for NanoBanana MCP, a server that lets Claude use Google Gemini to generate, edit, and analyse images. They describe the project, its commands, architecture, and available tools.

In plain words
What is it for?
Installing dependencies, building, running, and developing NanoBanana MCP. They also document image generation, image editing, image analysis, model selection, and aspect-ratio settings.
Why use it?
They give an AI coding assistant the context needed to work on the repository without guessing how it is built or what its tools do.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00923 $0.00923
Opus 5 $0.00462 $0.00462
Sonnet 5 $0.00185 $0.00185
Haiku 4.5 $0.00092 $0.00092

Security

Grade A, and why

nanobanana-mcp CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 11d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Project Overview

NanoBanana MCP is a Model Context Protocol server that enables Claude Desktop/Code to use Google Gemini's multimodal capabilities for image generation, editing, and vision analysis.

Build Commands

npm install # Install dependencies
npm run build # Compile TypeScript to dist/
npm run dev # Development mode with hot reload (tsx watch)
npm run start # Run compiled server

Architecture

Single-file MCP server (src/index.ts) using stdio transport:

  • MCP SDK Integration: Uses @modelcontextprotocol/sdk for server/transport
  • Dual Gemini SDKs:
    • @google/generative-ai (genAI) - For chat operations
    • @google/genai (genAINew) - For image generation/editing with streaming

Tools Exposed

Tool Model Purpose
set_aspect_ratio N/A Required before image generation/editing. Set aspect ratio for session
set_model N/A Switch between flash/pro models at runtime
gemini_chat configurable Multi-turn conversation with up to 10 images
gemini_generate_image configurable 2K image generation with consistency support
gemini_edit_image configurable Image editing via natural language
get_image_history N/A View session image history
clear_conversation N/A Reset conversation context

Aspect Ratio (Required)

Valid values: 1:1, 9:16, 16:9, 3:4, 4:3, 3:2, 2:3, 5:4, 4:5, 21:9

Must call set_aspect_ratio before gemini_generate_image or gemini_edit_image. No default value - returns error if not set.

Runtime Model Selection

Use set_model tool to switch models per-session without restarting:

  • model="flash" → gemini-3.1-flash-image-preview (faster, default)
  • model="pro" → gemini-3-pro-image-preview (higher quality)

Slash Commands:

  • Claude Code: cp commands/claude-code/*.md ~/.claude/commands/
  • Cursor: cp commands/cursor/*.md ~/.cursor/commands/
  • /nb-flash - Switch to Flash model
  • /nb-pro - Switch to Pro model

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
