About the project

grepai is a local command-line tool that searches source code by meaning and traces function call graphs, rather than matching only exact words. Developers and coding agents use it to find relevant code, understand relationships between functions, and provide focused context for changes while keeping the code on the local machine. The catalogue entries expose its commands, skills, agent, and instruction for coding-agent workflows.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.01279 $0.01279
Opus 5 $0.00639 $0.00639
Sonnet 5 $0.00256 $0.00256
Haiku 4.5 $0.00128 $0.00128

Measured 5d ago against content hash 1b2cf7f8e335, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-08-30, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

grepai CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 5d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Architecture Overview

grepai is a semantic code search CLI tool that indexes code using vector embeddings for natural language queries.

Core Components

Interfaces define extensible backends:

  • embedder.Embedder (embedder/embedder.go) - Text-to-vector embedding providers
  • store.VectorStore (store/store.go) - Vector storage with similarity search

Current implementations:

  • Embedders: Ollama (local), OpenAI (cloud)
  • Stores: GOB (file-based), PostgreSQL with pgvector

Data Flow

  1. Scanner (indexer/scanner.go) - Walks filesystem respecting gitignore patterns
  2. Chunker (indexer/chunker.go) - Splits files into overlapping chunks with context
  3. Indexer (indexer/indexer.go) - Orchestrates scanning, chunking, embedding, and storage
  4. Watcher (watcher/watcher.go) - Monitors filesystem for real-time incremental updates
  5. Searcher (search/search.go) - Embeds query and performs similarity search

CLI Commands (cli/)

  • init - Creates .grepai/config.yaml with default configuration
  • watch - Starts daemon: full index + real-time file watcher
  • search - Queries the index with natural language
  • agent-setup - Configures Cursor/Claude Code integration

Configuration

Configuration stored in .grepai/config.yaml. Key options:

  • embedder.provider: "ollama" or "openai"
  • store.backend: "gob" or "postgres"
  • chunking.size/chunking.overlap: Token-based chunking parameters

Adding New Backends

New embedder: Implement Embedder interface in embedder/, add config in config/config.go, wire in CLI commands.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

grepai CLAUDE.md is an instructions file published in the GitHub repository yoanbernabeu/grepai (1,838 stars, last pushed 3d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 1,279 tokens to every session, about $0.0064 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
