web-basics-mcp: Instructions file for Codex

AGENTS.md

web-basics-mcp AGENTS.md is an instructions file for Codex, OpenCode from yoloyash/web-basics-mcp. It costs 763 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

Repository instructions for a Node.js package and MCP server that searches the web and safely fetches web pages. They describe its architecture, public tools, data limits and safety boundaries.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use them when developing or reviewing yoloyash/web-basics-mcp. They guide changes to search, URL fetching, HTTP handling, content extraction, tests and related files.
Why use it?
They give a coding agent the project rules it needs before changing the code. This helps preserve existing tool names and result formats while keeping network requests and returned content controlled.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00763 $0.00763
Opus 5 $0.00381 $0.00381
Sonnet 5 $0.00153 $0.00153
Haiku 4.5 $0.00076 $0.00076

Measured 5d ago against content hash 0b053adf7b0a, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-09-06, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

web-basics-mcp AGENTS.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 5d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Repository Instructions

web-basics is a small Node.js package and stdio MCP server. Its public surface is intentionally limited to web search and safe URL fetching.

Architecture

src/
|-- index.ts # public package exports
|-- api.ts # core API and types
|-- stdio.ts # executable entrypoint
|-- server.ts # MCP server factory
|-- tools/ # MCP adapters
|-- lib/ # HTTP, search, cache, env, and error helpers
`-- content/ # HTML, PDF, image, Reddit, and text extraction

test/ # Node test runner tests and fixtures
docs/ # maintainer runbooks
build/ # generated package output

Keep MCP adapters thin. Shared behavior belongs in src/api.ts, src/lib/, or src/content/.

Contracts And Boundaries

  • Preserve the web_search and fetch_url tool names and result shapes unless a contract change is intentional.
  • web_search accepts query and limit. fetch_url accepts url, start_index, and max_length.
  • Keep results bounded. Continue long text with next_start_index.
  • Route all outbound fetches through src/lib/http.ts. Preserve checks for protocols, credentials, private hosts, DNS results, redirects, content types, and response sizes.
  • Keep HTML extraction offline after fetch: Defuddle first, then the gated Readability fallback.
  • Keep caches optional and disposable. Never cache failures or make correctness depend on a cache hit.
  • Keep the completed-result search cache limited to SearXNG. For Brave Search and keyless providers, coalesce only concurrent identical requests and do not retain completed responses.
  • For Reddit post URLs, fetch public old Reddit HTML first and use RSS only as a fallback. Cache successful results by canonical post ID for at most one hour, honor stricter upstream cache directives, and do not require credentials.
  • Load runtime configuration from the package-root .env, not the MCP client's working directory.
  • SEARCH_PROVIDER selects auto, searxng, brave, firecrawl, exa, or duckduckgo; SearXNG remains the default and explicit selections are terminal. Automatic mode uses configured Brave and SearXNG providers, then adds Firecrawl, Exa, and DuckDuckGo only when SEARCH_ALLOW_KEYLESS_FALLBACK=true. SEARXNG_URL points to user-managed infrastructure, while Brave uses its fixed official endpoint and BRAVE_SEARCH_API_KEY. Do not add bundled search infrastructure, proxy/VPN routing, browser automation, or answer synthesis.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
