pyodbc-mcp-server: Instructions file for Claude Code

CLAUDE.md

pyodbc-mcp-server CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code from yudontknowjack/pyodbc-mcp-server. It costs 1,523 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

Repository-specific instructions for Claude Code working on a read-only SQL Server access service. They describe setup, tests, formatting, type checking, and required environment settings.

In plain words
What is it for?
Installing the project for development, running tests with coverage, starting the service locally, formatting code, and checking types.
Why use it?
They give the coding agent the project’s expected commands and safety rules, reducing guesswork when changing or checking the code.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.01523 $0.01523
Opus 5 $0.00762 $0.00762
Sonnet 5 $0.00305 $0.00305
Haiku 4.5 $0.00152 $0.00152

Security

Grade A, and why

pyodbc-mcp-server CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 7d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Project Overview

MSSQL MCP Server - A Model Context Protocol server providing read-only SQL Server access via Windows Authentication. Uses FastMCP for protocol handling and pyodbc for database connectivity.

Development Commands

# Install for development
pip install -e ".[dev]"

# Run tests with coverage
pytest

# Run a single test file
pytest tests/test_server.py

# Run a specific test
pytest tests/test_server.py::TestSecurityFiltering::test_select_query_allowed

# Run the server locally (requires env vars)
python -m mssql_mcp_server

# Format code
black src tests
isort src tests

# Type checking
mypy src

Environment Variables

Variable Default Description
MSSQL_SERVER localhost SQL Server hostname
MSSQL_DATABASE master Target database
ODBC_DRIVER ODBC Driver 17 for SQL Server ODBC driver name

⚠️ SECURITY WARNING: Never store sensitive credentials in .env files within the repository directory. Use .env.example as a template and create your local .env file outside the repository, or use GitHub Secrets for CI/CD tokens.

Architecture

Single-File Server Design

The entire MCP server lives in src/mssql_mcp_server/server.py. This file contains:

  • Database connection logic using pyodbc with Trusted_Connection=yes
  • All five MCP tools decorated with @mcp.tool()
  • Security filtering logic for read-only enforcement

MCP Tool Structure

Tools are registered via FastMCP decorator pattern:

mcp = FastMCP("mssql-readonly")

@mcp.tool()
def ToolName(args) -> str:
    # Returns JSON string

Security Model

The ReadData tool implements security at two levels:

  1. Query prefix check: Only queries starting with SELECT are allowed
  2. Keyword scanning: Blocks dangerous keywords (INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE, DROP, CREATE, ALTER, EXEC, etc.) even in subqueries

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
