notabene AGENTS.md

notabene AGENTS.md is an instructions file for Codex, OpenCode from z29k/notabene. It costs 275 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

Agent instructions for notabene, a documentation renderer and review system that stores review comments as JSON files. They describe the required process for handling comments left in the repository's documentation review store.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use them when changing notabene, updating documentation, or addressing documentation review comments, particularly comments stored under docs/.notabene/.
Why use it?
They prevent agents from editing generated files, processing comments that should be held, deleting the review store, or committing changes without permission. They identify the canonical protocol to consult first.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00275 $0.00275
Opus 5 $0.00138 $0.00138
Sonnet 5 $0.00055 $0.00055
Haiku 4.5 $0.00028 $0.00028

Measured 4d ago against content hash 71e2c368732b, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-08-30, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

notabene AGENTS.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 4d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Agent instructions

This repo is notabene (renderer + review protocol) and its own consumer: docs/ holds the user documentation, reviewed with the loop itself. Architecture, conventions and the quality gates live in CLAUDE.md — read that before changing code. The protocol is documented in docs/reference/agent-protocol.md (canonical) and generated from there into the plugin skills and the npm package; never edit a generated copy.

Documentation review (notabene)

Review comments on this repo's docs live in docs/.notabene/ — one JSON file per comment, committed with the code. When asked to "address the doc comments" (or anything equivalent), follow the notabene review protocol:

Non-negotiable: only process comments with status: "open" and hold: false; never delete the store; never commit without being asked.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
