OktaMCP: Instructions file for Claude Code

CLAUDE.md

OktaMCP CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code from Zantonse/OktaMCP. It costs 1,488 tokens per session, scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A set of Claude Code instructions for the Okta MCP Server, a project that lets AI agents manage Okta organizations using everyday language. It documents the project, setup commands, testing, linting, and debugging.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when installing, running, testing, linting, or debugging the Okta MCP Server.
Why use it?
It gives Claude Code the project-specific guidance needed to work on and run the repository correctly.

This is Zantonse/OktaMCP's own configuration. It tells Claude Code how to work on OktaMCP itself, so it is not a mod to install elsewhere. Copy it as a starting point and replace the rules that are about this project. Everything OktaMCP configures →

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.01488 $0.01488
Opus 5 $0.00744 $0.00744
Sonnet 5 $0.00298 $0.00298
Haiku 4.5 $0.00149 $0.00149

Measured 7d ago against content hash 0710adbd859d, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-09-08, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

OktaMCP CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 7d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Project Overview

This is the Okta MCP Server, a Model Context Protocol server that allows LLM agents to manage Okta organizations via natural language. It integrates with Okta's Admin Management APIs through the official Okta Python SDK. Beta software, Apache 2.0 licensed.

./run-server.sh # Run with .env file auto-loaded

Linting

uv run ruff check . # Check for lint errors
uv run ruff check --fix . # Auto-fix lint errors
uv run ruff format . # Format code

Testing

uv run pytest # Run all tests
uv run pytest tests/test_users.py # Run specific test file
uv run pytest -k "test_name" # Run tests matching pattern

Debug Mode

export OKTA_LOG_LEVEL=DEBUG
export OKTA_LOG_FILE="/path/to/okta-mcp.log" # Optional file output

Architecture

Entry Point & Server Lifecycle

src/okta_mcp_server/__init__.pyserver.py:main() → initializes logger, lazy-imports all tool modules, calls mcp.run().

The FastMCP instance is created at module level in server.py with a lifespan context manager (okta_authorisation_flow) that handles authentication on startup and token cleanup on shutdown. The lifespan yields an OktaAppContext dataclass containing the OktaAuthManager instance.

Tool Modules

All tools live under src/okta_mcp_server/tools/, organized by Okta resource domain:

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
