zenrows-mcp: Instructions file for Codex

AGENTS.md

zenrows-mcp AGENTS.md is an instructions file for Codex, OpenCode from ZenRows/zenrows-mcp. It costs 678 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

Repository instructions for coding agents working on the ZenRows MCP server, a service that lets software use web data tools. They define commands, code locations, commit rules, pull requests, and release checks.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use them to install dependencies, run type checks, linting, tests, and server checks, and understand how the project’s TypeScript code, commits, pull requests, and releases are handled.
Why use it?
They give an agent the project’s local rules and checks to follow, reducing mistakes before changes are pushed. They also distinguish local development from the hosted server.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00678 $0.00678
Opus 5.5 $0.00271 $0.00271
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00136 $0.00136
Haiku 4.5 $0.00068 $0.00068

Security

Grade A, and why

zenrows-mcp AGENTS.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 13d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

AGENTS.md

Instructions for coding agents working on this repository: the Zenrows MCP server (@zenrows/mcp), run locally over stdio and hosted at https://mcp.zenrows.com/mcp. To use Zenrows from an agent instead, connect that URL, or install the skills with npx skills add ZenRows/cli.

Commands

npm ci
npm run typecheck # tsc --noEmit
npm run lint # eslint src
npm test # node:test, offline
npm run check:server-json # server.json version matches package.json
npm run dev # stdio server with .env
npm run dev:http # hosted server on http://localhost:3000/mcp

CI runs check:server-json, typecheck, lint and test on Node 20 and 22. Run them before pushing. npm run test:e2e hits the live Crawl API and bills the key's account; see the README before running it.

Code

  • src/index.ts is the stdio entry point, src/http.ts the hosted one, and src/server.ts builds the server both use. Tools live in src/tools/.
  • Hosted is not local. createServer(..., { hosted: true }) runs on a shared server: a tool or resource that reads or writes the local disk must not be offered there, or must answer differently.
  • Without a key, /mcp answers only the read-only discovery methods (initialize, tools/list, prompts/list, resources/list, ...). Every other request keeps the 401 WWW-Authenticate challenge, which is what starts an OAuth client's sign-in. tests/public-discovery.test.ts guards it.
  • Tool and parameter descriptions say what a tool does and costs. Never words such as "stealth", "anti-bot" or "protected"; directory reviewers flag them, and tests/descriptions.test.ts fails on them. Every tool description is at least 30 characters.
  • Every tool declares readOnlyHint, destructiveHint and openWorldHint; tests/annotations.test.ts checks it.

Commits and pull requests (CI enforces these)

  • Conventional Commits in commit messages and the PR title: type(scope): subject. fix, feat and perf need a lowercase scope.
  • The subject says why the change is needed, not what the diff does.
  • No trailer lines (Co-authored-by, Signed-off-by, ...), no issue-tracker keys, and no "generated with/by" AI attribution, in commits, PR title or PR body.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
