copilot-setting: Instructions file for GitHub Copilot

.github/instructions/properties-config.instructions.md

copilot-setting properties-config.instructions.md is an instructions file for GitHub Copilot from zexion7873/copilot-setting. It costs 425 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

A set of rules for writing and reviewing Java properties configuration files used with Hibernate and JDBC. It covers database dialects, schema changes, connection settings, time zones, and password handling.

In plain words
What is it for?
It is for maintaining older Hibernate 4.2 and Spring XML database settings, including safe schema validation and environment-based password injection.
Why use it?
It helps prevent configuration that fails quietly, changes a live database unexpectedly, or exposes database credentials in shipped files.

Instructions file for GitHub Copilot

Written for GitHub Copilot: a Copilot instructions file.

This is zexion7873/copilot-setting's own configuration. It tells GitHub Copilot how to work on copilot-setting itself, so it is not a mod to install elsewhere. Copy it as a starting point and replace the rules that are about this project. Everything copilot-setting configures →

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00425 $0.00425
Opus 5.5 $0.00170 $0.00170
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00085 $0.00085
Haiku 4.5 $0.00042 $0.00042

Security

Grade A, and why

copilot-setting properties-config.instructions.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 1mo ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Properties Configuration Conventions

Values loaded by <context:property-placeholder> into the Spring XML context (instructions/xml-config.instructions.md). This is not a Spring Boot application.properties — no relaxed binding, no auto-configuration, no profile-specific defaults.

Hibernate

  • hibernate.dialect is org.hibernate.dialect.MySQL5Dialect or MySQL5InnoDBDialect — MySQL8Dialect and MySQL57Dialect do not exist in Hibernate 4.2 (they arrived in 5.x). The MySQL server version is irrelevant here; 4.2 resolves any MySQL 5+ server to the 5 dialect (instructions/spring-hibernate.instructions.md)
  • hibernate.hbm2ddl.auto=validate, or omit the property entirely — never update / create / create-drop. update mutates the live schema at startup, outside the reviewed migration scripts and their rollbacks (instructions/sql-ddl.instructions.md), and the damage is not reversible from the application side

Credentials & Connection

  • No plaintext jdbc.password in a file that ships with the build — inject from an environment variable or a secret store (instructions/security.instructions.md)
  • Pin the connection time zone in the JDBC URL rather than relying on the driver default: connectionTimeZone= on Connector/J 8.0.23+, serverTimezone= on 8.0.22 and earlier (still accepted as an alias). Left unset, a server whose zone resolves to an ambiguous abbreviation (CST, CET) fails with "The server time zone value ... is unrecognized"
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
