cairn: Instructions file for Claude Code

CLAUDE.md

cairn CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code from zilet/cairn. It costs 7,832 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

Repository-specific instructions for Cairn, a self-hosted wellness application for training, nutrition, and longevity. They describe its main purpose, development rules, and software structure, including its web app, API, MCP server, and scheduler.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use them before changing Cairn's code, documentation, data storage, web app, API, or connected agent features.
Why use it?
They give coding agents the project context and constraints needed to avoid breaking its design or adding unnecessary detail to the instruction file.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.07832 $0.07832
Opus 5 $0.03916 $0.03916
Sonnet 5 $0.01566 $0.01566
Haiku 4.5 $0.00783 $0.00783

Measured 3d ago against content hash 102c80acac0a, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-09-08, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

cairn CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 3d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 398 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

CLAUDE.md

Guidance for agents working in this repo. AGENTS.md symlinks here, so every agent loads this file every session.

Keep this file lean. It is a map of non-obvious constraints, not an encyclopedia. Do not inline API/tool inventories, changelogs, or per-round history — link out instead. When you want to add detail, add it to docs/ARCHITECTURE.md (or the right doc below) and leave a pointer here.

What Cairn is

A self-hosted, connected, day-reading wellness OS for training / nutrition / longevity with an agentic coaching loop. It opens to a calm Brief that reads your whole picture and suggests what kind of day today should be, propagates flagged lab findings across every domain they touch (the "connected brain"), runs adaptive nutrition, learns who you are, and surfaces quiet cross-domain insights one at a time.

One Node service (src/server.ts) serves four surfaces from one process: a vanilla PWA (/), a REST API (/api/*), an MCP server (/mcp, Streamable HTTP), and a background scheduler. Storage is SQLite via Node's built-in node:sqlite.

docs/VISION.md is the constitution — calm, suggestion-not-a-gate, no-scores, pull-never-push. Read it before shaping product behavior. (Its progress log is maintained separately; don't edit it as code housekeeping.)

Commands

npm run dev # tsx watch on src/server.ts -> http://localhost:8787 (auto-seeds on first boot)
npm run build    # typecheck client + transpile src/client -> public/js + tsc -> dist/
npm start # node dist/server.js (run build first)
npm test # node:test harness, sharded; pretest builds dist/
npm run migrate # print current user_version, apply pending migrations
npm run reset # delete data/cairn.db* and re-seed

Full deploy / migration / backup / restore playbook: docs/OPERATIONS.md. Docker image details and release flow: docs/SHARING.md.

Hard requirements

  • Node 24 is mandatory — that's where node:sqlite is unflagged. No native build step.
  • ESM with explicit .js import extensions (tsconfig is NodeNext). Importing a sibling .ts module is written from "./repo.js", never "./repo".
  • Every string rendered into innerHTML goes through escHtml/escAttr. The only exceptions are the two SVG libraries (art.js, cairn-body-figure.js), whose output is authored geometry and never interpolates caller text.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
