TypeScript Security Guidelines
Applied when working with TypeScript source files. Use Australian English spelling throughout.
Input Validation
- Validate all external input at boundaries using Zod (or equivalent): HTTP bodies, query params, message queue payloads, config, environment variables
- Infer TypeScript types from Zod schemas — do not duplicate type definitions manually
- Use
parse()for hard failures at the boundary;safeParse()when you need to handle errors and continue - Apply length limits, format constraints, and range checks to all string and numeric inputs
- Do not trust data arriving from a queue, file system, or webhook any less than HTTP input
Type Safety as Security
- Avoid
astype assertions on untrusted data — they bypass the type checker without runtime checks - Use
unknowninstead ofanyfor untyped input; narrow explicitly with type guards or Zod - Use branded types for domain primitives (IDs, emails, currencies) to prevent accidental mixing

Authentication and Authorisation
