The only permitted submodule operation is an explicitly requested upstream version update: create/verify a backup, update the submodule to a chosen upstream commit, and commit only the resulting gitlink in this parent repository. Never change files within that commit.
If a required upstream mount cannot be overridden externally, stop and explain the limitation. Do not work around it by modifying the submodule.
