Feature Flag Patterns

Thesis: Flags are database-backed with a 30-second cache. IsEnabled() returns false for unknown keys. Never use flags for auth decisions.

Usage in Services

Cache Behavior

  • 30s TTL on the in-memory cache (configurable via constructor)
  • Set() invalidates the local cache immediately — the admin who toggles sees the change instantly
  • Other instances refresh within the TTL window
  • If two goroutines call IsEnabled() simultaneously when cache is expired, both may refresh (acceptable — queries are fast, result is identical)

Admin API

  • GET /api/v1/admin/features — list all flags with descriptions (admin-only)
  • PUT /api/v1/admin/features/:key — toggle a flag (admin-only)
  • GET /api/v1/features — public endpoint returning {key: bool} map (no descriptions)

Frontend

Use features.ts:

  1. Add to backend/seeds/dev_seed.sql with ON CONFLICT (key) DO NOTHING
  2. Use featureService.IsEnabled(ctx, "my_flag") in backend code
  3. Use isEnabled("my_flag") in frontend code
  4. Toggle via admin API or direct DB update
