Core Philosophy

Code is read far more often than it is written. Optimize for the reader.

  • Prioritize readability over cleverness
  • Write for the maintainer who will read this code in 6 months (it might be you)
  • Clarity beats brevity — verbose but clear is better than terse but cryptic

Use Intention-Revealing Names

Names should answer: why it exists, what it does, and how it's used.

Avoid Abbreviations

Spell out names unless the abbreviation is universally understood.

  • Avoid: usr, mgr, cnt, qty, btn, msg

Consistent Vocabulary

Use one word per concept consistently throughout the codebase.

Avoid Negated Booleans

Positive names are easier to reason about, especially when combined with logical operators.
