When to Optimize

  • Measure first; optimize only when there is evidence of a problem (slow render, large bundle)

React.memo

  • Use for expensive components that receive stable props; avoids re-render when parent re-renders with same props
  • Custom compare: Second argument to memo(fn, (prev, next) => true if equal) when referential equality is wrong (e.g. only id matters)
  • Avoid: When props are new every render (inline objects/functions); when component is cheap

useMemo

  • Use for expensive computations (filtering large lists, heavy derivation); dependency array must be correct
  • Avoid: For trivial calculations; when deps change every render

useCallback

  • Use when passing stable callback to memoized child; same deps rules as useMemo
  • Avoid: When child is not memoized; when callback does not need stability

Code Splitting

  • Routes: const Page = lazy(() => import('./Page')); wrap with <Suspense fallback={...}>
  • Heavy components: Lazy load modals, charts, or below-fold content
