SQS Processing Patterns

Critical Rule

Return only failed message IDs in batchItemFailures, not the entire batch. Lambda will retry only those messages.

Handler Signature

  • SQSHandler; return type Promise<SQSBatchResponse>; return { batchItemFailures: SQSBatchItemFailure[] } where each entry is { itemIdentifier: record.messageId }

Processing Pattern

  • Parse event.Records; for each record parse body (JSON); validate with Zod (or similar); on success process and do not add to batchItemFailures; on catch push { itemIdentifier: record.messageId } and continue (or break for FIFO)
  • Concurrent: Promise.all(Records.map(...)) when order does not matter
  • Sequential: For FIFO or order-sensitive, process in loop; after first failure you may push remaining messageIds to batchItemFailures to preserve order
  • Add correlationId from message envelope to logger/tracer; create X-Ray subsegment per message if needed

Message Envelope

  • Prefer envelope: { metadata: { correlationId }, body: payload }; parse once, validate payload, propagate correlationId to logger and downstream

Conventions

  • Always return batchItemFailures for failed items; log total/failed/succeeded; use idempotency for state-changing work; validate message shape at entry

Anti-Patterns

  • Returning full batch on partial failure; throwing without adding to batchItemFailures; no validation of message body; ignoring correlationId
