sphinx-style-docstrings

Rules for writing Python docstrings in reStructuredText format, the markup style used by Sphinx documentation, with explicit parameter, type, return, and error descriptions.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use them when adding or updating docstrings in Python files, including functions and methods that accept parameters, return values, or raise errors.
Why use it?
They prevent different docstring formats from being mixed and make function documentation easier for Sphinx to process.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00454 $0.00454
Opus 5 $0.00227 $0.00227
Sonnet 5 $0.00091 $0.00091
Haiku 4.5 $0.00045 $0.00045

Measured 2d ago against content hash 288e018b9893, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-08-30, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

sphinx-style-docstrings scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 2d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Rule: Sphinx-Style Docstring Enforcement

  • For every function and method, write the docstring in reStructuredText (Sphinx) style.
  • Always include :param param_name: description and :type param_name: type for each parameter.
  • If the function returns a value, document it using :return: description and :rtype: type.
  • If the function raises exceptions, document these using :raises ExceptionType: description.
  • Do NOT use Google, NumPy, or EpyText docstring formats.
  • Docstrings MUST always start and end on their own lines.
  • The opening """ MUST be on a new line immediately after the function or class definition.
  • Do not use single-line docstring formatting ("""Docstring...""") even for short summaries.

Example (CORRECT)

def divide(a, b):
    """
    Divide two numbers.

    :param a: Dividend
    :type a: float
    :param b: Divisor
    :type b: float
    :return: Quotient
    :rtype: float
    :raises ZeroDivisionError: If b is zero.
    """
    if b == 0:
        raise ZeroDivisionError("Cannot divide by zero.")
    return a / b

Example (INCORRECT - Google Style)

def divide(a, b):
    """
    Divide two numbers.

    Args:
        a (float): Dividend
        b (float): Divisor

    Returns:
        float: Quotient

    Raises:
        ZeroDivisionError: If b is zero.
    """
    if b == 0:
        raise ZeroDivisionError("Cannot divide by zero.")
    return a / b

Only use Sphinx-style as showin in the CORRECT example above.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

sphinx-style-docstrings is a cursor rule published in the GitHub repository liquidz00/jamfmcp (8 stars, last pushed 10d ago), licensed Apache-2.0. It adds 454 tokens to every session, about $0.0023 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
