websocket-implementation

A guide for replacing regular HTTP polling with WebSockets, a connection that lets the server and browser exchange updates immediately. It covers changes needed on both the server and client.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when changing the design-selection flow from polling to live updates. It describes connection handling, automatic reconnection, health checks, and a fallback to polling.
Why use it?
It removes the delay and repeated requests caused by checking for updates every 500 milliseconds. It also addresses connection failures and cleanup.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00000 $0.00265
Opus 5 $0.00000 $0.00133
Sonnet 5 $0.00000 $0.00053
Haiku 4.5 $0.00000 $0.00026

Security

Grade A, and why

websocket-implementation scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 2d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

WebSocket Implementation Guide

This guide provides instructions for replacing the current polling mechanism with WebSocket communication.

Current Polling Implementation

The current implementation in src/tools/utils/serverUtils.ts uses HTTP polling:

  • Client polls /design-selection-finalized endpoint
  • Server maintains state with global variables
  • 500ms polling interval

WebSocket Implementation Plan

Server-Side Changes

  1. Add WebSocket support to the HTTP server
  2. Maintain WebSocket connections for each session
  3. Send real-time updates when selection is made
  4. Clean up connections on disconnect

Client-Side Changes

  1. Replace fetch polling with WebSocket connection
  2. Handle connection states (connecting, connected, disconnected)
  3. Implement automatic reconnection logic
  4. Update UI based on WebSocket events

Benefits

  • Instant response when selection is made
  • Reduced server load (no polling)
  • Better scalability
  • Cleaner bidirectional communication

Implementation Notes

  • Use the ws package for WebSocket support
  • Implement heartbeat/ping-pong for connection health
  • Add graceful degradation to polling if WebSocket fails
  • Consider using Socket.IO for additional features

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

websocket-implementation is a cursor rule published in the GitHub repository madebyaris/rakitui-ai (5 stars, last pushed 7mo ago), licensed MIT. It costs nothing until one of its globs matches a file; then it loads 265 tokens. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
