submodule-context

submodule-context is a cursor rule for Cursor from maoxx241/vllm-ascend-workspace. It costs 260 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

Repository rules for working with the vllm-ascend-workspace, which contains Git submodules: separate repositories included inside a larger repository. They explain how to handle changing submodule versions and their own instructions.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use them when inspecting or modifying the vllm or vllm-ascend submodules, switching versions, searching across both projects, or deciding whether an uninitialized submodule can be inspected.
Why use it?
They prevent agents from assuming that submodule files or commits are stable and help them avoid changing the parent repository's submodule sources incorrectly.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00260 $0.00260
Opus 5 $0.00130 $0.00130
Sonnet 5 $0.00052 $0.00052
Haiku 4.5 $0.00026 $0.00026

Measured 4d ago against content hash 8c16bf3a0a7c, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-08-30, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

submodule-context scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 4d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Submodule Context

This repository is a composable scaffold. vllm/ and vllm-ascend/ are Git submodules that may be checked out at any version — treat their content as volatile.

Key facts

  • Submodule versions switch frequently; never assume a specific commit or directory layout inside them.
  • Each submodule has its own AGENTS.md that ships with the checked-out version — always defer to the submodule's own AGENTS.md for version-specific coding conventions.
  • Do not modify .gitmodules URLs (keep community upstream URLs).
  • Submodule commits are independent of the parent scaffold repo.
  • Submodules may be uninitialized (empty directories); do not attempt to read their internal files when this is the case.
  • vllm/ is the upstream vLLM implementation (GPU-centric).
  • vllm-ascend/ is the Ascend NPU hardware plugin built on top of vLLM.
  • When searching across both, be aware that identically-named symbols may have different semantics.
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
