PostgreSQL LATERAL Join Patterns

Identifier Quoting

Don't quote identifiers early in functions. Quote them only when needed in SQL generation to avoid double-quoting issues.

❌ Wrong:

LATERAL Join Column Selection

When using LATERAL joins in PostgreSQL adapters, use different aliases for the table alias and column alias to avoid ambiguity:

  • Table alias: Use {alias}_lateral (e.g., posts_lateral)
  • Column alias: Use {alias} (e.g., posts)
  • Selection: Select using table_alias.column_alias (e.g., "posts_lateral"."posts")

Example:

This pattern prevents PostgreSQL from getting confused when both the table and column have the same name.

ORDER BY with LIMIT in Subqueries

When both ORDER BY and LIMIT are present in a LATERAL subquery, wrap the query in an inner SELECT that projects individual columns with aliases, then use json_agg(row_to_json(sub.*)) on the result:
