Backend Architecture & API Design

Layered Architecture

Target pattern for new features:

Router → Service → Query → Database

Layer Location Responsibility
Router packages/api/src/routes/ HTTP: validation, auth, responses
Service packages/{domain}/src/services/ Business logic, orchestration
Query packages/database/src/queries/ Prisma calls

Keep Prisma imports in the query layer only — this keeps services testable without mocking the database.

Code Organization

Top-down readability: Structure files so they read top-to-bottom:

  1. Constants & internal type definitions
  2. Public API (exported functions)
  3. Internal helpers

Function ordering: Callers before callees. Code reads naturally top-to-bottom.

Single responsibility: Each file should have one clear purpose. A focused 200-line service is fine; a 500-line grab-bag is not. Don't over-split into micro-files either.

Resource Naming

  • Nouns in paths, not verbs: GET /posts not GET /getPosts
  • Plural nouns for collections: /posts, /users
  • Nest max 2-3 levels: /posts/:postId/comments

Status Codes

Standard codes apply. Project-specific:

  • 409 — Conflict (slot occupied, duplicate resource)
  • 503 — Service Unavailable (external service failure)
