- To reset an entire subtree's state when a prop changes, use key, not an effect:
- React treats each key as a different component instance and resets all nested state.
Adjusting State – Use IDs and Recompute
- Prefer representing selection and relationships with IDs and recomputing derived objects in render instead of "adjusting" state in effects.
- Example: const selection = items.find(item => item.id === selectedId) ?? null;
Avoid Effect Chains
- Do NOT create effect chains where one effect updates state solely to trigger another effect.
- Instead:
- Compute simple booleans/derived data during render (e.g., const isGameOver = round > 5;).
- Compute next state inside the initiating event handler and batch state updates there.
Event-Specific Logic – Use Event Handlers
- Put logic directly in event handlers when it should run only because the user did something specific.
- Do NOT drive such behaviors by toggling some state and then reacting to it in an effect. Call the logic directly in the handler.
- If multiple handlers share logic, extract a regular function and call it from handlers instead of turning it into an effect.
