file-uploads

A set of rules for safely accepting images and other files, including checks around Supabase Storage, a hosted file-storage service.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when adding file uploads, especially with Supabase, to scope uploads to the signed-in user and validate the files before storing them.
Why use it?
It helps prevent users from writing to arbitrary storage paths and reduces risks from unchecked file types or uploads.

Per session 0 Nothing until a file matches its globs; then the whole rule loads.
When invoked 737 The whole file, excluding the scripts and references it only reads on demand.
Security scan A 0 findings. Scan, not verified.
Origin original No closer match found in the catalogue.
Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00000 $0.00737
Opus 5 $0.00000 $0.00368
Sonnet 5 $0.00000 $0.00147
Haiku 4.5 $0.00000 $0.00074

Measured yesterday against content hash 78c9ed3ce996, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-08-30, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

file-uploads scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured yesterday.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

File Upload Security Rules

RULE 1: NEVER Upload Directly From Client to Supabase Storage With the Anon Key

Client-side uploads with the anon key allow users to upload to any bucket path. Always generate a signed upload URL server-side, scoped to the authenticated user.

✅ CORRECT — server generates signed URL:

// Server Action
'use server'
import { createClient } from '@/lib/supabase/server'

export async function getUploadUrl(filename: string, contentType: string) {
  const supabase = await createClient()
  const { data: { user } } = await supabase.auth.getUser()
  if (!user) throw new Error('Unauthorized')

  // Scope the path to the user's ID — prevents path traversal
  const path = `${user.id}/${Date.now()}-${filename}`

  const { data, error } = await supabase.storage
    .from('uploads')
    .createSignedUploadUrl(path)

  if (error) throw error
  return { signedUrl: data.signedUrl, path }
}

❌ WRONG — direct client upload with anon key:

// Client Component -- exposes storage to manipulation
const { data, error } = await supabase.storage
  .from('uploads')
  .upload(`${filename}`, file) // No user scoping — any path writable

RULE 2: Validate File Type and Size Server-Side

Client-side validation is bypassed trivially. Always re-validate on the server.

✅ CORRECT:

const ALLOWED_TYPES = ['image/jpeg', 'image/png', 'image/webp']
const MAX_SIZE_BYTES = 5 * 1024 * 1024 // 5MB

export async function POST(request: NextRequest) {
  const formData = await request.formData()
  const file = formData.get('file') as File

  if (!file) return NextResponse.json({ error: 'No file provided' }, { status: 400 })
  if (!ALLOWED_TYPES.includes(file.type)) {
    return NextResponse.json({ error: 'Invalid file type' }, { status: 400 })
  }
  if (file.size > MAX_SIZE_BYTES) {
    return NextResponse.json({ error: 'File too large' }, { status: 400 })
  }
  // Safe to process
}

RULE 3: Always Scope Storage Paths to User ID

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

file-uploads is a cursor rule published in the GitHub repository vibestackdev/vibe-stack (7 stars, last pushed 2d ago), licensed MIT. It costs nothing until one of its globs matches a file; then it loads 737 tokens. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
