doctrine-navigation

doctrine-navigation is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from 0ryant/engineering-doctrine. It costs 65 tokens per session (953 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A navigation guide for reading and citing an engineering doctrine library. It directs an agent to the right principles, patterns, sections, and lifecycle information.

In plain words
What is it for?
It is for consulting engineering doctrine during development work and producing path-and-section citations.
Why use it?
It helps prevent citing the wrong kind of document or giving references that readers cannot check. It also makes an explicit lack of guidance visible.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00065 $0.00953
Opus 5.5 $0.00026 $0.00381
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00013 $0.00191
Haiku 4.5 $0.00006 $0.00095

Security

Grade A, and why

doctrine-navigation scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 1mo ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Doctrine Navigation Skill

Kind: always-on primer for doctrine consumers Authority: advisory; the cited files hold the authority, not this skill

Purpose

Stop the two commonest retrieval failures: citing the wrong layer (a checklist, tooling illustration, or evolution note quoted as if it were a principle) and citing without a checkable location. The layer model this skill enforces is how-to-read-this-doctrine.md; the reason the layers exist is timeless-principles-and-tooling.md.

Instructions

When you consult this doctrine library:
1. Route by task from ENGINEERING.md, then read the owning principle or pattern in full before citing it. The umbrella and any semantic index are route maps, not authority.
2. Take authority only from doctrine/principles/ (durable) or doctrine/patterns/ (conditional: active only when the pattern's applicability conditions hold). Never cite a checklist, tooling file, estate supplement, or evolution note as the authority for an obligation.
3. Cite by repo-relative path and section, for example doctrine/patterns/run-contracts.md section 3, and quote the strength keyword exactly as written.
4. Check lifecycle status before relying on a file: doctrine/DEPRECATED.md and any Status marker in the file take precedence over its body text.
5. Where two files appear to conflict, apply the conflict-resolution rules in how-to-read-this-doctrine.md and record the conflict; do not pick silently.
6. Say when the doctrine is silent. Absence of guidance is a finding, not permission to invent a rule.

Suitable for estate-policy injection on every task class that touches doctrine; the block is small and carries no task-specific behaviour.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
