mvn-source-explorer

mvn-source-explorer is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from 85danf/agent-skills. It costs 170 tokens per session (2,403 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A tool for finding the real Java source behind a Maven dependency in the local dependency cache. Maven is a Java build tool, and a dependency is a library that a project uses; if source is unavailable, the tool decompiles the needed class.

In plain words
What is it for?
It helps trace library call chains, follow imports, inspect requests and retry or caching behavior, find which dependency owns a class, and reconstruct client requests.
Why use it?
It lets you inspect what a library actually does instead of guessing from its public names or documentation.

Written for no agent in particular: nothing here depends on one.

Good fit It helps trace library call chains, follow imports, inspect requests and retry or caching behavior, find which dependency owns a class, and reconstruct client requests.

One page per mod, every tool's command on it. A separate URL per tool would split the same page into five that compete with each other.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

Fable 5.1 $0.00170 $0.02403
Opus 5.5 $0.00068 $0.00961
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00034 $0.00481
Haiku 4.5 $0.00017 $0.00240

Security

Grade A, and why

mvn-source-explorer scanned grade A with 1 finding against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 1mo ago.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 1 executable file (scripts/source_explorer.py), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Not a fault in itself. Listed so you know the mod talks to something, and to what.

Resolve a Maven dependency to the real Java source behind it, then read and trace it like any other file in the repo.

Never state what a library does without having actually read the relevant class through this skill (or already-open code) -- no inferring behavior from method/class names. When source came from get's decompile path, always say so and note the accuracy caveat (types from outside the jar may show as raw/erased signatures) -- never present decompiled output as if it were the original source.

When to use this skill

  • Tracing what a library actually does internally (call chains, HTTP requests it builds, retry/caching behavior) instead of inferring from its public method names
  • Following an import in project code back into the dependency that defines it
  • Answering "reconstruct the exact request/curl this client sends" or similar reverse-engineering questions about a dependency
  • Finding which declared dependency a class name belongs to
  • Any of the above for a dependency that lacks a -sources.jar (falls back to decompiling just that class)

Not for: Gradle/sbt-resolved dependencies (Maven-only), editing library code, or dependencies that were never downloaded to ~/.m2/repository (run a build first).

Prerequisites

  1. python3 (stdlib only -- no pip installs).
  2. mvn on PATH, optional -- when a dependency has no sources jar locally, get first tries mvn dependency:resolve-sources/resolve -Dclassifier=javadoc to fetch one before falling back to decompiling. Skipped silently if mvn isn't on PATH or the download fails.
  3. java on PATH, but only needed the first time a dependency still lacking a sources jar (after the download attempt above) is decompiled. Any Java/Maven project already requires this.
  4. Network access, but only for the CFR decompiler jar download (~2MB, from Maven Central, sha256-pinned, one-time) and the optional mvn-based sources download above. Never required for a dependency that already has a sources jar locally.
  5. No config file, no credentials, no API keys.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

mvn-source-explorer is a skill published in the GitHub repository 85danf/agent-skills (2 stars, last pushed 1mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 170 tokens to every session and 2,403 once invoked, about $0.0007 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 1 finding (makes network calls). No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-09-26.
