knowledge-base-setup

knowledge-base-setup is a skill for Claude Code from a2ngerer/claude_onboarding_agent. It costs 82 tokens per session (5,596 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A setup guide for building and maintaining a linked knowledge base from Markdown files, using the Karpathy LLM Wiki pattern and Google's Open Knowledge Format, a portable structure for sharing knowledge between tools. It can cover codebases, personal notes, or both.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to organize project knowledge, personal notes, or a combined wiki, and to connect that knowledge base with Obsidian, a note-taking application.
Why use it?
It gives scattered information a consistent structure with searchable concepts and links, while keeping the files portable instead of tied to one tool.

Skill for Claude Code

Written for Claude Code: PreToolUse hook event. Also seen: reads .claude/ paths; mentions CLAUDE.md; mentions subagents.

Not installable: its command points at a path on the author’s own machine, so it runs nowhere else. The line is /Users/you/Documents/MyVault.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00082 $0.05596
Opus 5 $0.00041 $0.02798
Sonnet 5 $0.00016 $0.01119
Haiku 4.5 $0.00008 $0.00560

Measured 5d ago against content hash 0847e37f5aa3, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-09-06, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

knowledge-base-setup scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 5d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 360 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

Knowledge Base Setup

This skill configures Claude to build and maintain a structured, interlinked knowledge base using the Karpathy LLM Wiki pattern. The generated wiki/ is an OKF v0.1 bundle — Google Cloud's Open Knowledge Format, the published, vendor-neutral standard that formalizes the LLM-wiki pattern (a directory of Markdown concept files with YAML frontmatter, cross-linked with standard Markdown links). Conformance keeps the knowledge base portable across any OKF-aware agent or tool, not just Claude.

Handoff context: Read skills/_shared/consume-handoff.md and run it with the handoff block (if any). The helper guarantees the following locals: detected_language, existing_claude_md, inferred_use_case, repo_signals, graphify_candidate. Use detected_language for all user-facing prose; generated file content stays in English.

Existing CLAUDE.md: If existing_claude_md: true, DO NOT overwrite it. Append a new delimited section at the end of the file:

<!-- onboarding-agent:start setup=knowledge-base skill=knowledge-base-setup section=claude-md -->
## Claude Onboarding Agent — Knowledge Base
...generated content...
<!-- onboarding-agent:end -->

If the delimited block already exists from a previous run, replace only the content between the markers; leave the rest of the file untouched. Wrap generated .gitignore entries in # onboarding-agent: knowledge-base — start / — end markers so /upgrade-setup can refresh them non-destructively.

Supporting Files

Read these on-demand at the step that invokes them. Do not read eagerly.

  • skills/_shared/consume-handoff.md — orchestrator handoff parse + inline fallback (preamble, before Step 1)
  • skills/_shared/offer-superpowers.md — canonical Superpowers opt-in (Step 1)
  • document-skeletons.md — OKF-conformant concept-note / index.md / log.md skeletons, linking rule, type vocabulary, conformance self-check, Obsidian reconciliation (Step 3)
  • skills/_shared/offer-graphify.md — canonical Graphify opt-in (Step 4)

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
