dependency-injection-patterns

dependency-injection-patterns is a skill for Claude Code from Aaronontheweb/dotnet-skills. It costs 35 tokens per session (1,958 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A way to organize service registrations in ASP.NET Core, the Microsoft framework for building web applications. Related services are grouped into reusable Add methods instead of being listed throughout Program.cs.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when registering repositories, services, factories, or other application components with Microsoft’s dependency-injection container. It also covers conditional, keyed, and test-specific registration patterns.
Why use it?
It keeps application setup easier to read and lets the same service configuration be reused in production and tests.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00035 $0.01958
Opus 5 $0.00017 $0.00979
Sonnet 5 $0.00007 $0.00392
Haiku 4.5 $0.00003 $0.00196

Security

Grade A, and why

dependency-injection-patterns scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Dependency Injection Patterns

When to Use This Skill

Use this skill when:

  • Organizing service registrations in ASP.NET Core applications
  • Avoiding massive Program.cs/Startup.cs files with hundreds of registrations
  • Making service configuration reusable between production and tests
  • Designing libraries that integrate with Microsoft.Extensions.DependencyInjection

Reference Files

  • advanced-patterns.md: Testing with DI extensions, Akka.NET actor scope management, conditional/factory/keyed registration patterns

The Problem

Without organization, Program.cs becomes unmanageable:

// BAD: 200+ lines of unorganized registrations
var builder = WebApplication.CreateBuilder(args);

builder.Services.AddScoped<IUserRepository, UserRepository>();
builder.Services.AddScoped<IOrderRepository, OrderRepository>();
builder.Services.AddScoped<IProductRepository, ProductRepository>();
builder.Services.AddScoped<IUserService, UserService>();
// ... 150 more lines ...

Problems: hard to find related registrations, no clear boundaries, can't reuse in tests, merge conflicts.

The Solution: Extension Method Composition

Group related registrations into extension methods:

// GOOD: Clean, composable Program.cs
var builder = WebApplication.CreateBuilder(args);

builder.Services
    .AddUserServices()
    .AddOrderServices()
    .AddEmailServices()
    .AddPaymentServices()
    .AddValidators();

var app = builder.Build();

Extension Method Pattern

Basic Structure

namespace MyApp.Users;

public static class UserServiceCollectionExtensions
{
    public static IServiceCollection AddUserServices(this IServiceCollection services)
    {
        services.AddScoped<IUserRepository, UserRepository>();
        services.AddScoped<IUserReadStore, UserReadStore>();
        services.AddScoped<IUserWriteStore, UserWriteStore>();
        services.AddScoped<IUserService, UserService>();
        services.AddScoped<IUserValidationService, UserValidationService>();

        return services;
    }
}

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
