think-react

A structured reasoning method that alternates between forming a reason, taking an action, and observing the result. ReAct is short for reasoning and acting in a repeated cycle.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it for systematic investigation and debugging that requires several cycles of reasoning and tool use.
Why use it?
It provides a repeatable way to investigate problems when each observation should guide the next step.

Made for: Claude Code, Codex.

Per session 31 Skills are progressive disclosure: only the name and description are preloaded; the body loads when the skill is used.
When invoked 273 The whole file, excluding the scripts and references it only reads on demand.
Security scan B 1 finding. Scan, not verified.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00031 $0.00273
Opus 5 $0.00015 $0.00137
Sonnet 5 $0.00006 $0.00055
Haiku 4.5 $0.00003 $0.00027

Measured 2d ago against content hash 32b45169be1f, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-08-30, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade B, and why

think-react scanned grade B with 1 finding against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 2d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

.claude/, .codex/, .gemini/ hold keys, settings and other credentials a mod has no legitimate need for.

What it actually says

ReAct

Start Session

Before beginning, register this think session:

# Check for active session
if [[ -f /tmp/.claude-think-session ]]; then cat /tmp/.claude-think-session; fi

If another session is active, ask the user to finish or abandon it first. Otherwise:

echo "react" > /tmp/.claude-think-session

Work Through Stages

Read the strategy definition and follow its stages in order:

cat ~/.claude/hooks/ways/meta/think/strategies/react.md

This strategy is cyclic (max 8 iterations). Work through the reason-act-observe loop until you have enough evidence to synthesize a conclusion.

Complete Session

After synthesizing a conclusion, clean up so the think way can fire again:

rm -f /tmp/.claude-think-session /tmp/.claude-way-meta-think-*"${CLAUDE_SESSION_ID:+-$CLAUDE_SESSION_ID}" 2>/dev/null
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

think-react is a skill published in the GitHub repository aaronsb/claude-code-config (18 stars, last pushed 4mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 31 tokens to every session and 273 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it B with 1 finding (reads agent configuration directories). No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
