terraform-cli

terraform-cli is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from abdullahkhawer/devops-skills. It costs 27 tokens per session (1,145 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A skill for using Terraform's command-line tool to inspect and plan infrastructure changes. Terraform manages infrastructure from configuration files, while workspaces and variable files separate environments such as production and testing.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to plan changes, validate configuration, inspect state, and work with Terraform workspaces for different environments.
Why use it?
It reduces mistakes caused by using the wrong workspace, backend, or variable file. It also keeps environment selection explicit before planning or inspecting infrastructure state.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00027 $0.01145
Opus 5.5 $0.00011 $0.00458
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00005 $0.00229
Haiku 4.5 $0.00003 $0.00114

Security

Grade A, and why

terraform-cli scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 23d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Terraform CLI Skill

Use the workspace table and rules below when constructing all terraform commands.

Configuration

Update the table below with your Terraform workspace/backend names before using this skill:

Environment Workspace Backend Config / Var File
Production <your-prod-workspace> <your-prod.tfvars>
Staging / Non-Prod <your-nonprod-workspace> <your-nonprod.tfvars>
Sandbox / Dev <your-sandbox-workspace> <your-sandbox.tfvars>

If the target environment is unclear, ask the user before running any command.

Prerequisites (one-time setup by user)

If terraform is not installed or the backend is not initialized, inform the user that setup is required and ask them to complete the following steps manually. Do not perform these steps yourself.

brew install terraform
terraform init
terraform workspace list

Command Format

Always run commands from the directory containing the relevant Terraform root module, and pass -var-file explicitly for the target environment:

terraform <command> -var-file=<var-file> [options]

Examples

# Select the correct workspace before running any command
terraform workspace select <your-nonprod-workspace>

# Non-Prod
terraform plan -var-file=<your-nonprod.tfvars> -out=tfplan

# Show a saved plan in human-readable form
terraform show tfplan

# Show a saved plan in JSON (for programmatic inspection)
terraform show -json tfplan

Available Commands

Read-only (safe, no confirmation needed)

Command Description
plan -var-file=<file> [-out=tfplan] Show or save a proposed set of changes — does not mutate infrastructure
validate Check configuration syntax and internal consistency
fmt -recursive [-check] [-diff] Format or check formatting of .tf files
show [tfplan] Show the current state or a saved plan in human-readable form
show -json [tfplan] Show the current state or a saved plan as JSON
state list List all resources tracked in state
state show <resource> Show attributes of a resource in state
output [-json] Show output values from the root module
workspace list / workspace show List or show the current workspace
graph Generate a visual dependency graph (DOT format)
providers List provider requirements and versions
version Show Terraform and provider versions
console Open an interactive expression evaluator (read-only against current state)

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
