api-design

api-design is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from AbdulmalekAlshugaa/claude-agents-fullstack. It costs 40 tokens per session (875 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A set of conventions for designing Next.js backend interfaces, including route handlers, server actions, input checks with Zod, and service-layer code.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when adding or changing an API endpoint, server action, or backend service function in a Next.js project.
Why use it?
It helps keep API and backend changes structured and ensures incoming data is checked before it reaches application logic.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00040 $0.00875
Opus 5.5 $0.00016 $0.00350
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00008 $0.00175
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00088

Security

Grade A, and why

api-design scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 1mo ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

API design: route handlers, server actions, services

Choosing the mechanism

  • Server component rendering static/one-shot data → call the service directly. No HTTP hop.
  • Data a client component reads (refetched, paginated, mutated, shared) → server action used as the queryFn of a TanStack Query queryOptions factory (see the tanstack-query skill).
  • Mutations from your own UI → server action, wrapped in useMutation when called from a client component (cache invalidation), or useActionState for plain RSC forms.
  • Endpoint consumed by external clients / mobile / webhooks → route handler. Also switch a read to a GET route handler when it needs HTTP/CDN caching or parallel requests (server actions serialise).
  • Never build a route handler just so your own client component can fetch it — the action-as-queryFn pattern covers that.

Route handler shape (thin)

src/app/api/<resource>/route.ts:

import { NextResponse } from 'next/server'
import { createUserSchema } from '@/modules/users/schemas/user'
import { createUser } from '@/modules/users/services/create-user'

export async function POST(req: Request) {
  const body = await req.json().catch(() => null)
  const parsed = createUserSchema.safeParse(body)
  if (!parsed.success) {
    return NextResponse.json({ error: parsed.error.flatten() }, { status: 400 })
  }
  const result = await createUser(parsed.data)
  if (!result.ok) {
    return NextResponse.json({ error: result.error }, { status: result.status })
  }
  return NextResponse.json(result.data, { status: 201 })
}

Pattern: parse → authorize → call service → map result to response. Under ~30 lines; anything more belongs in the service.

Server actions

  • File-level 'use server' in modules/<feature>/actions.ts.
  • Every action validates input with Zod and checks auth itself — server actions are public HTTP endpoints regardless of where the button lives.
  • Return shape depends on the caller:
    • Used as a TanStack Query queryFn/mutationFn → return the plain DTO and throw on failure (Query needs a rejected promise for its error state).
    • Called from useActionState → return typed results ({ ok: true, data } | { ok: false, error }), don't throw for expected failures.
  • After a mutation: revalidatePath/revalidateTag if RSC-rendered data changed; the client-side invalidateQueries happens in the mutation's onSuccess, not here.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

api-design is a skill published in the GitHub repository AbdulmalekAlshugaa/claude-agents-fullstack (4 stars, last pushed 1mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 40 tokens to every session and 875 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
