tanstack-query

tanstack-query is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from AbdulmalekAlshugaa/claude-agents-fullstack. It costs 69 tokens per session (3,224 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A client-side data layer for TanStack Query v5, a library that loads, caches, updates, and synchronizes server data in web applications. It covers reads, writes, stale caches, Next.js App Router prefetching and hydration, mutations, invalidation, and optimistic updates.

In plain words
What is it for?
Designing query keys, loading and writing data, prefetching Next.js pages, refreshing stale data, and showing updates before the server confirms them.
Why use it?
It gives applications a defined way to handle server data instead of repeating fetching, caching, refresh, and update logic in individual components.

Skill for Claude CodeCodex

Written for no agent in particular: nothing here depends on one.

Needs its repository: it reads a path above its own folder, which exists only inside the repository. The line is import { listUsersOptions } from '../queries'.

Good fit Designing query keys, loading and writing data, prefetching Next.js pages, refreshing stale data, and showing updates before the server confirms them.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00069 $0.03224
Opus 5.5 $0.00028 $0.01290
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00014 $0.00645
Haiku 4.5 $0.00007 $0.00322

Security

Grade A, and why

tanstack-query scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 1mo ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Data handling with TanStack Query v5

@tanstack/react-query owns all client-side server state. React state is for UI state only (open/closed, selected tab, form draft). If a value came from the database, it lives in the Query cache — never in useState + useEffect.

The three-file convention per feature

src/modules/<feature>/
├── keys.ts # query key factory — the single source of truth for keys
├── queries.ts     # queryOptions factories (reads)
├── mutations.ts   # mutationOptions factories (writes)
├── actions.ts # 'use server' — the transport both of the above call
├── services/ # DB access (unchanged: services own the DB + business logic)
└── schemas/       # Zod schemas + z.infer types

Components never inline a queryKey or a queryFn. They import a factory.

1. Query keys — one factory, hierarchical

// modules/users/keys.ts
import type { ListUsersInput } from './schemas/user'

export const userKeys = {
  all: ['users'] as const,
  lists: () => [...userKeys.all, 'list'] as const,
  list: (filters: ListUsersInput) => [...userKeys.lists(), filters] as const,
  details: () => [...userKeys.all, 'detail'] as const,
  detail: (id: string) => [...userKeys.details(), id] as const,
} as const

Rules:

  • Hierarchical, general → specific. invalidateQueries({ queryKey: userKeys.lists() }) then hits every list regardless of filters, because invalidation is prefix-matched.
  • Every variable the queryFn reads is in the key. A filter, page, or id that changes the response but not the key is a cache-poisoning bug.
  • Serialisable values only — no class instances, no Date objects (use ISO strings).

2. Reads — queryOptions factories

queryOptions() is the "create options" helper: it keeps full type inference when options live outside the hook, and it ties the queryKey to its queryFn so queryClient.getQueryData(opts.queryKey) is typed with no annotation.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

tanstack-query is a skill published in the GitHub repository AbdulmalekAlshugaa/claude-agents-fullstack (4 stars, last pushed 1mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 69 tokens to every session and 3,224 once invoked, about $0.0003 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
