verify

verify is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from abe238/hotinai. It costs 18 tokens per session (823 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

Verification instructions for building and using the hotin command-line tool against its real public data sources. Verification here means checking the working command, rather than running automated tests.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use them to create an isolated Python environment, install hotin, run local checks, make a small live Hacker News request, and verify cached or end-to-end hot-topic results.
Why use it?
They provide a repeatable way to confirm that the installed CLI works, its configuration is readable, and its live data-fetching path behaves correctly.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00018 $0.00823
Opus 5 $0.00009 $0.00411
Sonnet 5 $0.00004 $0.00165
Haiku 4.5 $0.00002 $0.00082

Security

Grade A, and why

verify scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 4d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 63 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

Verifying hotin

hotin is a stdlib-only Python CLI (pyproject.toml entry point hotin = "hotin.cli:main"). Zero-key core (github, trends, hn, npm) hits real public APIs with no config.

Build a handle

python3 -m venv /tmp/hotin_verify_venv
source /tmp/hotin_verify_venv/bin/activate
pip install --quiet -e .
export XDG_DATA_HOME=/tmp/hotin_verify_xdg # isolates the sqlite cache from ~/.local/share

hotin is now a real binary on PATH. Config lives at ~/.config/hotin/.env (XDG_CONFIG_HOME, not XDG_DATA_HOME) — setup --check reads it directly, unaffected by the cache override above.

Drive it

  • hotin about / hotin setup --check — no network, sanity check the install.
  • hotin hn --limit 3 — one real live call, fast, good smoke test of the free-text GitHub-reference extraction (hn/reddit/youtube share this mechanism).
  • hotin hot --limit N --json — the real end-to-end surface: fetch_all() across all 8 adapters concurrently, cache, merge, rank. Takes ~25s (the fetch_all timeout ceiling) if any source is slow/failing — see gotcha below. Re-running within 300s (default TTL) should make previously-successful sources report "served from cache" and skip the network.
  • hotin search <query> --json, hotin show <owner/repo> --json — cache-only, instant, exercise the merge/score path without any network.
  • Probe error paths: search with no query (exit 2), negative --limit (exit 2), show on an uncached repo (clean JSON {"error": "not_cached", ...}, exit 0).

Known gotcha: npm always times out

hotin.sources.npm.fetch() does one search request per DEFAULT_QUERIES term, then one THROTTLE-gated (1.5s+jitter) download-stats request per candidate package, sequentially. With 5 query terms × up to 40 results each, that's typically 30-100+ unique candidates — 90-300+ seconds of pure throttle wait, blowing straight through engine.fetch_all's 25s per-cycle budget. Confirmed live 2026-07-19: npm reports "error", "timed out" on every hot run, first run AND subsequent warm-cache runs (since it never successfully populates its own cache entry, it's never "fresh" and always retries the full 25s). This is a known, reliably-reproducible issue, not flaky — don't waste another live run "confirming" it again.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

verify is a skill published in the GitHub repository abe238/hotinai (3 stars, last pushed yesterday), licensed Apache-2.0. It adds 18 tokens to every session and 823 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
