research-spike

research-spike is a skill for Codex from ABilenduke/copilot-developer. It costs 44 tokens per session (1,184 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A focused technical investigation workflow for resolving uncertainty before implementation through repository evidence, trusted sources, and limited experiments.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to compare technical options, check whether an approach is feasible, investigate dependency or repository constraints, and guide an implementation decision.
Why use it?
It prevents teams from choosing an approach based on assumptions about versions, constraints, or feasibility. It produces findings, a recommendation, and next steps for a specific decision.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00044 $0.01184
Opus 5.5 $0.00018 $0.00474
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00009 $0.00237
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00118

Security

Grade A, and why

research-spike scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 1mo ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Research Spike

Answer a decision-relevant question with traceable findings, a recommendation, and concrete next steps. Investigate directly; do not merely package questions for another research tool. Work without a feature catalog, companion skill, connector, specific model, or ticket system.

Frame the decision

Inspect the request, previous decisions, applicable repository instructions, relevant code, tests, dependency manifests and lockfiles, and existing research. Discover actual versions and constraints; do not assume a stack or treat a manifest's version range as the installed version. Use existing evidence before asking for information the repository can answer.

State the question, decision it enables, relevant constraints, and what evidence would settle it. Ask up to three related follow-up questions when missing information materially changes the options, acceptance threshold, experiment, or scope. Offer concrete choices and a recommendation when useful. No minimum question count or mandatory interview rounds. Preserve answered questions and authorization. For a broad request, propose a useful bounded question and investigate its unambiguous parts.

Honor explicit time, cost, or tool limits. Do not require the user to invent an hours-or-days estimate. Without a supplied budget, use a bounded evidence plan: inspect the relevant implementation, consult sources for remaining questions, and run the smallest useful experiments. Stop when decisive criteria are resolved, the budget is reached, or additional work cannot resolve the remaining gap with available access. Report uncertainty instead of extending research indefinitely or forcing a positive answer.

Gather evidence that changes the decision

Separate verified repository facts, external claims, experimental observations, inference, and unresolved assumptions. Reuse applicable evidence, checking its version, date, environment, and scope. A stale prototype or a journal's success claim is not current proof.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
