tidy

tidy is a skill for Claude Code from Abilityai/abilities. It costs 39 tokens per session (776 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A repository-structure audit and cleanup tool for finding outdated documents, misplaced files, unused configuration, and leftover test artifacts.

In plain words
What is it for?
It checks the project root, docs, config, tests, and archive folders, either across the repository or in a selected area.
Why use it?
It helps keep project files organised without changing code, and reports findings before cleanup changes are made.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00039 $0.00776
Opus 5.5 $0.00016 $0.00310
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00008 $0.00155
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00078

Measured 1mo ago against content hash 658ed55fa143, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-10-07, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

tidy scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 1mo ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

ℹ️ First, set expectations: before anything else, print one short line with this skill's version and its most recent change — the top entry of metadata.changelog above — e.g. tidy vX.Y — recent: <summary>. Then proceed.

Audit and clean up the repository structure without breaking code.

State Dependencies

Source Location Read Write Description
Requirements docs/memory/requirements.md ✅ Feature status
Feature Flows docs/memory/feature-flows.md ✅ Active flows
Root Files Project root ✅ Misplaced files
Docs Folder docs/ ✅ Outdated docs
Config Folder config/ ✅ Orphan configs
Tests Folder tests/ ✅ Test artifacts
Archive archive/ ✅ Archived files

Usage

/tidy # Full audit of all areas
/tidy docs # Audit only docs/ folder
/tidy root # Audit only root folder
/tidy tests # Audit only tests/ folder
/tidy --report-only # Generate report without any changes

Core Principles

  1. Never break code - Only touch non-code files
  2. Report before action - Always generate audit report first
  3. Archive over delete - Move outdated files to archive/
  4. Safe deletes are automatic - __pycache__, .pyc, test outputs
  5. Everything else needs approval

Procedure

Phase 1: Safe Cleanup (Automatic)

Delete without asking:

  • __pycache__/ directories
  • *.pyc, *.pyo files
  • .DS_Store files
  • *.log files in non-essential locations
  • node_modules/.cache/

Phase 2: Audit by Scope

  • Root folder: stray files, misplaced configs
  • Docs folder: outdated docs, drafts
  • Tests folder: orphan test outputs, stale fixtures
  • Config folder: unused configs

Phase 3: Generate Report

Report with tables for each area showing file, issue, and recommendation.

Phase 4: Wait for Approval

If --report-only, stop. Otherwise ask which actions to take.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

tidy is a skill published in the GitHub repository Abilityai/abilities (12 stars, last pushed 3d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 39 tokens to every session and 776 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-09-07.
