dependency-updates

dependency-updates is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from acquia/acquia-skills. It costs 32 tokens per session (1,268 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A procedure for updating Drupal packages managed with Composer, including Drupal core, contributed modules, and libraries.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to check outdated packages, update core or modules, and diagnose Composer conflicts after an update.
Why use it?
It helps identify outdated dependencies and resolve version conflicts while keeping package changes isolated on a separate branch.

Skill for Claude CodeCodex

Written for no agent in particular: nothing here depends on one.

Needs its repository: it reads a path above its own folder, which exists only inside the repository. The line is - If yes → follow the **[Drupal Update and Deploy playbook](../../playbooks/drupal-update-deploy/SKILL.md)** to push code, switch the environment, and optionall.

Good fit Use it to check outdated packages, update core or modules, and diagnose Composer conflicts after an update.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00032 $0.01268
Opus 5 $0.00016 $0.00634
Sonnet 5 $0.00006 $0.00254
Haiku 4.5 $0.00003 $0.00127

Security

Grade A, and why

dependency-updates scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Dependency Updates for Drupal with Composer

Use when:

  • Checking which packages are outdated
  • Updating Drupal core to a newer minor or patch release
  • Updating contrib modules or libraries
  • Resolving composer version conflicts after an update

Before You Start — Create a Branch

This step is mandatory. Do not run any composer commands until a new branch is created and confirmed. Never update packages directly on main or master.

Check the current branch first:

git branch --show-current

If the user is on main, master, or any protected branch, stop and ask: "What would you like to name the new branch for these updates?"

Suggest a default if they are unsure (e.g., deps/drupal-updates-YYYY-MM-DD).

git checkout -b <branch-name>

Confirm the new branch is active before proceeding:

git branch --show-current

Only continue to the next step once the output confirms a non-protected branch.

Check for Outdated Packages

composer outdated

Shows all packages with newer versions available. Columns: current version → latest available.

Check only direct dependencies

composer outdated --direct

Check a specific package

composer outdated drupal/core-recommended

Update a Specific Package

composer update drupal/package --with-all-dependencies

Update multiple packages at once

composer update drupal/package1 drupal/package2 --with-all-dependencies

Update Drupal Core (Minor or Patch)

Drupal core is split across multiple packages. Update all together:

composer update drupal/core-recommended drupal/core-composer-scaffold drupal/core-project-message --with-all-dependencies

Note: Minor upgrades (e.g., 10.2 → 10.3) may require relaxing the version constraint in composer.json first:

"drupal/core-recommended": "^10.3"

Then run the update command above.

Verify the installed version

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
