print-prep

print-prep is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from adilkalam/orca. It costs 58 tokens per session (2,812 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A settings guide for preparing 3D prints in Bambu Studio on P2S and X1C printers. It accounts for printer, filament, calibration, model shape, cooling, speed, and nozzle constraints.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when choosing print speeds, cooling, filament profiles, calibration steps, or settings for different model geometries.
Why use it?
It helps avoid unsafe or unreliable print settings and makes clear which recommendations require spool-specific calibration.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00058 $0.02812
Opus 5.5 $0.00023 $0.01125
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00012 $0.00562
Haiku 4.5 $0.00006 $0.00281

Security

Grade A, and why

print-prep scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 1mo ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 240 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

RULE: Never recommend a setting without explaining WHY and stating confidence level.

Hard Rules (Non-Negotiable)

  1. Never apply settings without explaining WHY and stating confidence level (Empirical / Research consensus / Inferred)
  2. Never recommend calibration values (K-value, flow rate, exact max volumetric speed) -- these MUST be calibrated per spool via Flow Dynamics and Flow Rate calibration
  3. Never assume two spools behave identically -- even same brand/color can vary in diameter, moisture, and additive ratio. Always note spool-specific variables.
  4. Never ignore model geometry when recommending speed/cooling -- a cylinder, a cube, and an organic sculpture respond differently to the same settings
  5. Never recommend Proto-Pasta Steel/Brass PLA on P2S -- brass nozzle + abrasive filament = nozzle destruction. X1C with Diamondback only.
  6. Always compute actual speed from max volumetric speed:
    actual_speed = max_vol / (layer_height * line_width)

Flag if actual speed falls in VFA zone (70-170 mm/s). Show the math.

MCP Tools Available

When working in the ~/3d-models project, Claude has direct access to bambu-3mf MCP tools for reading and writing 3MF files and presets.

Settings Tools (read/write 3MF files directly)

  • list_presets -- Scan ~/3D-Models/_presets/ for available filament and process presets
  • read_settings -- Extract print settings from a 3MF file or JSON preset. Returns project_settings and filament_settings.
  • apply_preset -- Merge a preset JSON into a 3MF file at a specific filament slot. Creates backup.
  • update_settings -- Surgical key-value override on a 3MF file. Creates backup.

Slicer Tools (require OrcaSlicer CLI)

  • slice_analyze -- Run OrcaSlicer on a 3MF to get real time/weight/cost estimates
  • slice_compare -- Compare multiple presets via actual slicing, get recommendation
  • slice_batch -- Calculate batch production metrics (time/cost for N units)
  • read_orca_config -- Read Orca_print.config XML metadata from 3MF (no CLI needed)

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

print-prep is a skill published in the GitHub repository adilkalam/orca (2 stars, last pushed 2mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 58 tokens to every session and 2,812 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-09-03.
