dotfiles: Skill for Claude Code

.claude/skills/ste-writing/SKILL.md

ste-writing is a skill for Claude Code from ahonn/dotfiles. It costs 41 tokens per session (1,649 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A writing guide for reports, pull-request descriptions, issues, reviews, documentation, and procedures. It uses rules from Simplified Technical English, a controlled style designed to make technical instructions easier to read consistently.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to draft or rewrite technical reports, PR text, commit and issue text, README pages, runbooks, migration steps, warnings, and error messages.
Why use it?
It reduces sentences and words that can be read in more than one way. It helps readers act on a report or understand a document without the original conversation.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00041 $0.01649
Opus 5.5 $0.00016 $0.00660
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00008 $0.00330
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00165

Security

Grade A, and why

ste-writing scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 20d ago.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 1 executable file (scripts/ste_lint.py), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

STE Writing

ASD-STE100 (Simplified Technical English) is the controlled language of aircraft maintenance manuals. It removes the two main causes of misreading: a word with more than one meaning, and a sentence with more than one structure.

This skill applies that discipline to two readers. The user reads a report and must decide or act on it. An external reader of a PR or a document does not have the conversation and cannot ask the author.

The rules are derived from STE. They do not make a text STE-compliant, because compliance needs the official dictionary from asd-ste100.org. Do not claim compliance.

Scope

Text Apply
Report, finding, summary, plan, or explanation for the user Core rules, report order
PR description, commit body, issue, review comment Core rules, PR order
README, guide, reference page Core rules, documentation order
Procedure, runbook, migration steps, error message, warning Core rules in strict mode
Code, identifiers, commands, log output, quoted text No change
Marketing copy, blog post, text where voice is the point Out of scope

This skill does not select the language. Before you draft, read the reference for the language of the text:

The user's instructions, a repository template, a project style guide, and a required format take precedence over this skill. Apply the skill to what they leave open.

Meaning Comes First

A text that obeys each rule and changes the meaning is a failure. Do not do these things to satisfy a rule:

  • Do not change or remove a fact, a number, a condition, or a scope qualifier.
  • Do not remove or strengthen a hedge. "The request may have failed" does not mean "The request failed".
  • Do not invent an actor to remove a passive.
  • Do not replace a precise term with a plain word that has a different meaning.
  • Do not add a cause, a number, or a mechanism that you did not observe.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
